Brother 465 CN – MFC 465 Inkjet Color Printer

The Brother MFC-465CN is an all-in-one machine that can print, scan, copy, and fax. It has been unavailable for sometime as it has already been discontinued by Brother. It can now be found on Amazon, but is currently being sold at a pricey $400.

It has been said that old models could fare cheaper but not quite so in this instance, and I can’t really explain that but perhaps because the seller thinks there’s a high demand on the machine, therefore the value can be set higher as well. I thought that only applies to jewelry or real estate property, not electronics.

Whatever, it’s also selling as used for only $45. Although be warned in buying second hand electronics. There’s a reason why people sell them after they’ve experienced using it. So it’s best that you know why they’re selling before buying. Besides, you won’t have any warranties when you buy second hand. But let’s see why it’s said there’s a high demand for it. Let’s look into the features of the Brother MFC-465CN.

Features

As already mentioned above, the 465CN is a multifunction machine that has everything you need in just a small unit that measures 15.7″ W x 14.6″ D x 7.1″ H, and weighs 18.1 lbs. It has a 2.0” color LCD display where you can view the photos to print from a memory card, or your PictBridge-enabled portable device like your camera, PDA or a Smartphone – and this without the use of a computer.

It has a Built-in Ethernet interface which allows you to setup your printer to work within your local network. It registers good speed values – prints up to 30 pages per minute (ppm) in black, and 25 ppm in color, using print resolution of up to 6000 x 1200 dpi. Copy speeds are up to 22 copies per minute (cpm) in black, and 20 cpm in color, with reduction and enlargement capabilities from 25% to 400%, as well as 2-in-1 or 4-in-1 function.

It has a standard input tray that can hold up to 100 sheets, which accommodates varied media sizes that range from widths of 3.5″/5.0″ up to lengths of 8.5″/14.0″ and sheet weights of 17-58 lbs., i.e. Letter, Legal, Executive, A4, A5, Photo (4″x6″, 3.5″x5″, 5×7, 5×8), and a by-pass tray that can hold up to 20 sheets of 4” x 6” photo paper. There is an automatic document feeder for making copies as well that can hold up to 10 sheets at a time.

It does B/W and color scanning, up to a maximum optical resolution of 600 x 2400 dpi. It can scan to different file formats, i.e. JPEG, BMP, TIFF, PDF, HTM, RTF, MAX and others; and to E-mail, Image, OCR, File, and Card.

It sends and transmits faxes in B/W and color using a 14.4K bps fax modem with its best transmission speed registering at 6 seconds per page. It saves faxes received when it’s out of paper into its built-in memory that has up to 480 pages capacity. It has fax forwarding and dual access as well but on B/W mode only.

The Brother MFC-465CN is PC and Mac compatible.

These are just a few of the many features of the Brother MFC 465CN, and there’s more but it’s just too many to mention. In all, it really is a value-packed all-in-one machine that having one means you wouldn’t need anything more.

There’s really very little said as regards the downside of this machine. But generally, it’s only the high ink consumption – which was resolved by some customers by using bargain ink or continuous ink which comes out cheaper. Most manufacturers would like to say you can’t use ink other than the original for whatever reason, (although we know it’s because that’s where they profit more), some people are able to use their machines longer than most because of the economical method of continuous ink.

The Brother MFC 465CN is a very good machine altogether. But since there is some difficulty in availing of it these days, you can look towards the next best thing, the Brother MFC-990CW Color Inkjet All-in-One with 5.8GHz Cordless Handset and Wireless Connectivity. It is a feature packed machine where Brother had updated the 465CN plus adding wireless capability and a communications center with a cordless handset makes it a lot more viable. Its retail value is $230 on the Brother site, but can get it for much less, only $215, at Amazon, where it’s given a 4-star rating out of 5 by customers who had left feedback on the site.

So, it would be a good idea to shop around first than grabbing the first thing you see. Paying more for an old model may not really be a good move.
