How Does The Brother MFC 5490 Compare?

Brother has made quite an impact in the affordable multifunction world. So much so that it’s the first place most would look when searching a multifunction in that category. No big thrill on function but tailored to give enough without having too much with the view to being affordable for the small business or home user. The Brother MFC 5490 is an all-in-one printer, copier, scanner and fax machine made for small business. This all-in-one printer does not have a huge price tag on it.

What It Does

It is ideal for presentations, reports, business applications and spreadsheets and can handle 150 sheets in its paper capacity of sizes from 3.5″ x 5″ to 8.5″ x 14″ and also has an auto document feeder.
The Brother MFC 5490 has the capability to print photos directly from your media card or a USB hook-up.

It has the ability to connect to other computers wirelessly. When scanning items on the MFC 5490 you can have them scanned straight to your email. You can also store numbers in the memory, up to 100.
This all-in-one has many different things that it can do, as you can see. Enough to make it sufficient, but not so much as to make it expensive.

It uses a 4 cartridge ink system where as you only need to change the empty cartridge. The speed is excellent at 35ppm black and 28ppm on color prints and a resolution of 6000 x 12000 dpi. It has a maximum monthly duty cycle of 4000 prints with the recommended volume being 250 to 2000 pages.

Other Features

We mustn’t forget when talking about a multi function printer, that there are more things to pay attention to other than the speed and resolution of the printer. We can overlook the fact that it has a scanner, a fax and a copier to check out too.

The fax can send color faxes with the exception of fax forwarding and dual access. It also has Hi-Speed Super G3 33.6K bps Fax Modem and the quickest transmission speed being 3 seconds per page. There is no message center or a telephone handset, but has a fax page memory of 480.

It scans in color with maximum resolution of 19200 x 19200 dpi interpolated and optical scan resolution of 1200 x 2400 dpi. The copier is a flatbed with speed of 23cpm black and 20ppm color. You don’t need a computer to use it and has an automatic document feeder with a maximum capacity of 50 sheets. It has a sorting function as well as poster function with a glass size only up to letter.

Reception

While reading some of the reviews for the specific model there are both pros and cons to it. Most people agree that it is a pretty fast printer and it is quite reliable, which is definitely a plus. Another pro is that the ink is inexpensive which helps keep maintenance costs down when having to refill the ink. Often the complaint with brother printers is just the opposite.

Most people also agree that the color printing is fantastic and it has excellent quality. Therefore, in conclusion the Brother MFC 5490 is a great value for your money. It has everything that you would need in a printer, copier, scanner and fax machine. It does everything one could ask for with the wireless capability and also being able to store the most commonly used fax numbers, just to name a few.

However, there are a few cons to this specific model too for example it is quite large and the paper tray does not hold more than 50 sheets. Almost everyone out there who has purchased this printer agrees that it is a great value and it is easy to set up initially. Nevertheless, when all is said and done, this printer is an excellent buy and a great value for your money.

Where to Buy and Other Products Range

You won’t have any problems tracking down this still current model from Brother. The Brother MFC-5490CN retail price from Brother is $130 but can be found as low as under $115.

Brother has a great range of inexpensive multifunction color inkjets on the market like the Brother MFC-J415W in the same price range. You can lose functions you don’t require such as with the Brother MFC-J615W Inkjet All-in-One Printer which is minus a copier which makes it even less cost at under $95.

Other models of interest for the small business or home user are the Brother MFC-490CW Color Inkjet Wireless All-in-One Printer for around $170.

Brother has cornered this market of affordable multifunction machines at the kind of prices we want to pay. They have a great selection. They have business printers with larger scan capability like the Brother MFCJ6910DW with duplex printing and touch screen and comes with a 3 year warranty all for around $240. It has wired Ethernet network dual paper trays each holding 250 sheets.

I’m a fan of Brother and the way they aim to be affordable. They have the best range of all within their multifunction category and if you’re in the market for a great all in one at a price you can afford, see Brother first.
