Brother MFC 790 CW – Top Notch For Small Offices

The Brother MFC 790CW is one of the best all-in-one printers on the market for a small office. The 790CW is actually a five-in-one, meaning it can print, scan, copy, fax, and PC fax. One of its greatest features is that it’s extremely easy to use. This is a big selling point. People don’t like to be bothered with complicated software and features.

Though not very important to most, the 790CW is by far the best-looking model in the entire Brother MFC series. If four adjectives were used to describe its appearance, they would be: sleek, neat, compact, and cool. This model has been discontinued by Brother, but still available online and currently sells for $109 new on Amazon, where you can also find it refurbished at $119.95 and used at $100.

The Brother MFC 790CW has wireless and Ethernet capabilities, allowing you to share your printer within a network and have multiple users. This is important for anyone considering this model for a small office. You can also take advantage of this in a home.

Other big advantages for the 790CW are that it is capable of full duplexing and its PictBridge compatible. The former will help you save money, time and paper. The latter will allow you to print directly from digital cameras, PDA’s and camera phones. Another great feature is the 4.2-inch Touch Screen. This will allow you to preview and enhance documents prior to printing, copying, scanning or faxing. The 790CW has a 15-page automatic document feeder, which while below average, will still help you save time.

The 790CW can print up to 33 pages per minute black and 27 pages per minute color. Print resolution can reach as high as 6000 x 1200 dots per inch and ink droplets can be as small as 1.5 picoliters. The quality stats are good, but the speed stats are great.

It prints onto a wide range of media sizes from widths of 3.9″/5.8″ up to lengths of 8.5” x 14” or legal size, i.e. Letter, Legal, Executive, Envelope (C5 Envelope, Com-10, DL Envelope, Monarch, JE4 Envelope), A4, and varied Photo paper sizes (4″x6″, 3.5″x5″, 5″x7″, 5″x8″, 8″x10″), and paper weights from 17 to 58 lbs.

The fax machine sends and transmits in B/W and Color, runs at 33.6Kbps, which equals three seconds per page. There is faster than this out there now, but this still gets the job done. The fax machine also has a built-in digital answering machine that can store up to 29 minutes or 99 messages; a nice feature to have for anyone that will make regular use of the fax machine. When you run out of paper, it can save everything it receives in its memory bank that can hold up to 480 pages.

The scanner is able to scan thick documents. This sounds like a simple feature, but is actually very important and a customer favorite. The 4-ink cartridge system will help you save money on ink; you will only need to replace the ink that runs out. The input tray can handle up to 100 sheets and there is also a 20-sheet max bypass tray. The latter is for 4 x 6 inch glossy paper.

The recommended monthly duty cycle for the 790CW is 1,000 sheets. In addition to that, this model qualifies for Energy Star. I don’t think I’ve ever been so exhausted writing about so many features. Good for you, bad for my carpal tunnel.

The only negatives for the Brother MFC 790CW are lack of volume capability and paper jams. The former is listed as a negative because this means the 790CW can’t handle high volume needs. If you need it for small to medium volume needs, then this isn’t an issue. The only other negative is paper jams. That said, you only need to put in less sheets onto the input tray, then you should greatly reduce this problem.

User Reviews

It is always good to read through user feedback on a product that you are considering buying as these inputs give you an idea on how the product performs. On Amazon, the 790CW was given a high rating of 4.5 stars out of 5 by customers, which meant general satisfaction to its performance with a few minor negatives being mentioned.

It has been reported that customers are satisfied with its being a five-in-one that offers almost everything that you will need in a machine that is more than just a printer. High quality photo printing, high speed printing, different fax functionalities, and thick document scanning are just a few of the features highlighted that made people impressed and happy about their purchases.
