Brother is the first place to look if you’re searching for multi-function printers at an affordable price. They have made this their specialty over the years and seem to have cornered the market quite effectively in this field.
The Brother MFC-885CW Photo Color All-in-One does it all. Prints, Scans, Copies, Fax and PC Fax with media slots and a message center. Pretty much everything a small business may need.
All-in Office
The first thing that stands out about the Brother MFC 885CW is that it looks like a hybrid between a robot and a printer. It’s small and somewhat flat, but it has more buttons and panels than the everyday all-in-one.
This isn’t meant in a bad way at all. Actually, it looks pretty neat. The coolest aspect is the 5.8GHz cordless phone attachment on the left side. It immediately makes you realize that you have more of an all-in-one office than an all-in-one printer.
It is completely purpose made for a small office. There is a very high customer satisfaction rating of 90%. This is ridiculously high, especially for an all-in-one in this price range.

Features
The customer satisfaction numbers might be great, but you’re obviously not going to buy on that alone. That being the case, let’s go over some features. The first thing you should know is that there are wireless and Ethernet connections. The built-in wireless connection operates at 802.11b/g. The Ethernet connection will give you a networking option.
The Brother MFC 885CW also has a 4.2-inch LCD display, which will give you an opportunity to preview and enhance prints and copies. Red-eye adjustments and skin tone enhancements will be taken care of automatically on photo prints. Speaking of photo prints, you can print photos from many digital cameras.
Okay, let’s get to some speed and quality stats. The 885cw can print up to 30 pages per minute black and 25 pages per minute color. This is well above average. Prints can also reach resolution as high as 6000 x 1200 dots per inch. Copies can be produced at 22 pages per minute black and 20 pages per minute color, which is slightly above average.
You will also be able to enlarge and reduce copies from 25% to 400%, which is a standard feature for most Brother Machines. In addition to that, there is a 10-page automatic document feeder. This is well below average, but at least there is an ADF, which some models don’t have at all.
Scans can reach resolution up to 600 x 2400 dpi and 36-bit color depth. Unfortunately, there are no speed stats for the scanner. However, you will be pleased to know that the software for the scanner is easy to use.
The fax machine runs at 14.4Kbps, which equals approximately six seconds per page. You will have caller ID and an answering machine with nearly 30 minutes of recording time.

The Brother MFC 885CW is an excellent fit for a busy home office or a small to medium-sized business office. It’s one of the most productive and reliable printers on the market. It also comes with a 1-year warranty.
Why So Popular
Brother has excellent understanding of small business users giving them enough quality for quality work without going overboard on features that price it too high for many a small business user.
Every function seems to be greeted with praise from users making it strong in all departments and not just a good printer with additions. Most reviews are fairly split but in the case of the Brother MFC 885 CW, Brother seems to have hit all the sweet spots at once.
Slight Drawbacks
Well, despite the rave reviews there are one or two minor quibbles. Standard grumbles really regarding the price of inks from Brother. However, this is easily overcome by looking for inks for this printer on Amazon.
Another slight inconvenience is that you cannot print while using the phone. Again, it’s not exactly a matter that will put off most buyers. For all round, solid, dependable multi function with speed and quality prints, this is an ideal buy.
The price of the Brother MFC-885CW Photo Color All-in-One varies and it is available at what some may consider a high price at around $380. Perhaps it being a now discontinued model from Brother has made the price rise a little as can be the case, as the scarcity influences the market.
Upgraded and More Affordable
After presenting you with a slightly higher price than what I would have liked to have, I can bring you some cheer to make it a happy ending all round. The upgrade to the Brother MFC-885CW is available considerably cheaper. The Brother MFC-990CW Color Inkjet All-in-One can be found for as little as $215.
It’s quite an improvement on speed managing 33ppm black and 27ppm on color. Resolution is identical to the MFC-885CW and everything the 885CW does, then so does the Brother MFC-990CW Color Inkjet All-in-One.
The drawback of buying a popular machine that is discontinued is that it becomes harder to obtain but in this case the upgrade simply solves that problem. Sometimes even upgrades can be of lesser quality in order to bring down the price of the previous model. In this case, nothing is lost and it’s a win-win situation by going for the upgrade.
