One advantage for this color laser printer is that you will be able to connect via Ethernet or wirelessly. You will have the option of using the USB interface, in which you can print directly from any PictBridge compatible digital camera or mobile phone. It also comes with integrated wireless networking.
That said, this printer is best suited for a fast-paced office. Its best feature is that its maximum monthly cycle is 35,000 prints. This is above and beyond what you will find with other printers at this price. Also, keep in mind that this printer is 20.9 x 21 x 20.5 inches and 83 pounds. It is not a good option for small spaces.
Multifunctional Brother
When looking for a multifunction or all in one printer, many look to Brother first. They have made quite a specialty in that field. They tend to focus on models that are of a decent standard and in many cases many decent standard features and kept at affordable prices.
The printer is not lightning speed but at 21ppm for both color and black documents in the fastest mode, it’s decent and fast enough for many. Same could be said for the resolution as the 4 toner cartridges and one drum printer gives you 2400 x 600 maximum dpi.
The copier works at the rate of 17cpm for both black and color and is a flatbed. It copies in color and the reduction/enlargement is from 25% – 400% and the document glass size can fit legal size. The maximum Automatic document feeder can hold 50 pages.
The scanner is can also perform in color and can scan duplex and optical resolution of Up to 1200 x 2400 maximum dpi.
Back to the printer it has a maximum input paper capacity of 250 sheets. The monthly duty cycle is 35,000 and recommended monthly print volume is 500 to 3,000 pages.
The fax is also color with a best transmission of 2 seconds a page with a fax modem speed of 33.6K bps and can send a duplex fax. This is an ideal model for a small business with moderate volume.

Another all in one from Brother which has excellent value is the Brother MFC-9450CDN Color Laser Multifunction Center which is under $480 on Amazon and has very similar abilities and attributes to the MFC 9840. Again, it’s a printer, scanner, copier and fax with a print speed of 21ppm black and color. It also has built in Ethernet interface automatic duplex printing and a 2400 x 600 maximum dpi resolution giving you very professional print quality. The paper input tray can hold 300 sheets.
Again a copy speed of 17cpm black and color. The scanner has an optical resolution 1200 x 2400 dpi and with a flatbed document glass can be used to scan; copy or fax irregularly shaped or bound documents up to 8.5 x 11 inches. It all sounds all very similar doesn’t it and this model is at a price of under $480.
You will never be short of choices in multifunction laser printers from Brother and another good option is the Brother MFC 9970CDW.
With Wireless, Ethernet and USB interfaces and a faster speed of up to 30ppm and the usual resolution of 2400 x 600 max dpi on the printer as well as an automatic document feeder. It has a standard paper capacity of up to 300 sheets and delivering outstanding color output.
Another feature is a 5″ color touch screen display and advanced duplex capability. The document glass can take up to legal size and has high speed faxing 33.6K bps fax modem.
This model is a little cheaper on Amazon than direct from brother by around $73 with a price tag lower than retail value at $627.
Brother really is the multifunction specialist, and makes affordable models that are not overly packed with features. This is one of the reasons why they are often more affordable. All these models are printer, scanner, copiers and fax.
Not done yet as there are so many choices in this field and further considerations Brother MFC9560cdw Color Laser All-in-One with Wireless Networking and Duplex and the Brother Printer MFC7860DW Wireless Monochrome Printer with Scanner, Copier & Fax for those that only require monochrome multifunction ability for an affordable $222.
Many of the ranges from Brother all have very similar specs and have a high quality of print and generally all the functions work well. They never make a world beater but they do design and manufacture models that suit a lot of people’s needs and are very focused on affordability.
