The Brother MFC-990CW is an all-in-one color inkjet machine. It can print, scan, copy and fax. More importantly, it does all of this well. Customers tend to agree. This model has a 75% customer satisfaction rating, which is very high.
The current list price for the MFC-990CW is $230, but it can most likely be found cheaper on sites such as Amazon. Amazon is your best bet for buying new, refurbished or used models. You may find the MFC-990CW new from $186.
Of course, it’s always better to spend a little extra money and go with a new model, or at least refurbished. When you buy used, you’re always going to have to worry about what you weren’t told.
Features
The Brother MFC-990CW can operate on USB, wireless and Ethernet interfaces. Due to USB direct, PictBridge compatibility, and media card slots, direct photo prints are possible. You can also print directly from Bluetooth-enabled devices. These are nice luxuries to have, and thankfully, not the only ones the 990CW offers.
For example, borderless prints are possible up to 6000 x 1200 dots per inch. In addition to that, there’s a 4.2-inch LCD Touch Screen display. This will allow you to preview and enhance documents. A 4-cartridge system will also help you save time and money because you will only need to refill the ink cartridge that runs out. There’s a 100-sheet input tray and 20-sheet bypass tray for 4 x 6-inch glossy paper. The 15-page automatic document feeder will allow you to get work done without needing to hover over the printer.
The All-in-One printer by Brother can print up to 33 pages per minute black and 27 pages per minute color. These numbers are above average. The copier can produce up to 22 copies per minute black and 20 pages per minute color. Once again, above average. The MFC-990CW can handle documents up to 8 x 14 inches.
Another bonus for the copier is that you can reduce and enlarge documents from 25% to 400%. Scans can reach resolution as high as 1200 x 2400 dots per inch as well as 38-bit color depth. The fax machine operates at Super G3 33.6Kbps speed.
One feature that is unique to the Brother MFC-990CW is the Digital Answering Machine, which could hold up to 99 messages or 29 minutes of messages, a full duplex speakerphone and 5.8GHz cordless handset.

What People Say
While there are a lot of impressive features and stats for the Brother MFC-990CW, there are also a few negatives. The first negative is that the auto-cleaning feature can’t be stopped and will always draw ink from your cartridges.
A few models have this feature. It can be annoying, but you just have to remind yourself that every printer is going to have some kind of angle to get you to spend more on ink. That’s how Hp, Brother, Epson, Canon, etc. make a lot of their money.
The other negative is that print quality is just average. That said, you’re getting a lot in different areas. Sacrificing high print quality shouldn’t be a big deal as long as that’s not your primary concern.
On the other hand, some people reported that they are happy with the 990CW, its versatility and capability of doing everything well. Others say it is a perfect example of how technology is advancing so rapidly. The many features give joy to the user, including photo printing that can be done in many different ways, plus the large LCD display and touch-screen are very good welcome features.

In a nutshell
The positives: Outstanding features like the Triple-interface connectivity that includes USB, Ethernet LAN, and Wi-Fi; interactive 4.2-inch touch-screen LCD; 5.8GHz digital handset and answering machine built-in; inexpensive; small and stylish.
The negatives: Print speeds are quite on the lower side but still good if you don’t do high volume printing. It suffers the same mechanical errors that affect other Brother printers as far as the USB and Ethernet ports are concerned (difficult to access that it entails using up a lot of cable slack because of the extensive internal looping); it only ships with starter ink cartridges; and no USB cord included.
The bottom line: The Brother MFC-990CW All in One Printer is a model that takes all the good from other models in the series and encompasses it into one machine with the majority of the negatives overshadowed. A great fit for any home or small office that will make use of its touch screen and telephone/answering machine.
