Older classic
One of Canons earliest portable printers is the Canon BJC-85 Portable Color Bubble Jet Printer. Now it used to be a top seller and was regarded highly in its time but has long since been discontinued by Canon. Canon have moved on to better things but this could be a good idea for a used buy for those that do not have the funding for the later versions.
To consider buying a new model in the price range that they are available would be foolish, but you can find some great deals on used models making portable printing affordable for perhaps a student or small business man on the move. For a low volume user then this could be an excellent buy.
By today’s standard of portable printer, the Canon BJC-85 is somewhat slow compared to the newer portable color printers, but depending on the kind of need you have then speed is not always important to everyone, especially if you’re a low volume user such as a student.
It would be highly recommendable if the newer Portable color printers on the market where not so vastly improved, but before you buy then it is worth exploring the newer options on the market with faster speeds and higher resolution.
This model has been surpassed long ago by the Canon PIXMA iP100 Mobile Photo Printer which as in the case of most upgrades will outperform the earlier models, but this can be your route to becoming mobile at an affordable price. It was a highly regarded machine in its day.
It has 64 nozzles for black document and photo printing and 24 for color using 3 colors. It comes with built in USB, IEEE 1284 parallel and Irda for wireless printing which is compatible to windows 98/2000/ CE 2.1 only.
Another thing is it can function as a scanner with an optional color image scanner cartridge taking a 15’’ x 12’’ size image scan. The quality of the printing is crisp, clear and is smudge free. It is fully compatible with PC and Mac operating systems
Purchasing
New it is somewhat expensive but the quality is not lacking and can match many a desktop printer. Used models can be obtained at incredible prices.
Another feature is a long life battery that can print up to 200 pages nonstop. It is lightweight and compact as well as stylish and sleek. It also has a 30 sheet feeder for continuous printing.
On Amazon, you can find new models of the Canon BJC-85 Portable Color Bubble Jet Printer for around $565 and used are as little as $90.
Optional extras include the Canon NK-300 Portable Kit available on Amazon at around $90.
For other optional add-ons you may need to go to the Canon site to purchase such as the IS-12 Color Image Scanner Cartridge.
If you take the new model option then as always with Canon it comes with a one year warranty, for those that take the used model option then it is reassuring that Canon are well blessed with service centers all across the country.
Better Upgrades
Having already mentioned the newer models on the market then it could be wise to compare it alongside the Canon PIXMA iP100 Mobile Photo Printer as on a new model they are far better value but you do not have the luxury of finding a bargain as a used model as this is a more recent model therefore not so many used units are available.
The Canon PIXMA iP100 has a much faster print speed of 20 ppm black and 14 ppm color and resolution of 600 x 600 dpi black and 9600 x 2400 dpi color.
With the addition of the optional battery and Bluetooth even it could be deemed a better buy.

There are also used options available on this model for around $110 and Bluetooth and battery also need a separate purchase but still is better value.
Read the many reviews of these later models online before you purchase older BJC 85 by Canon as if print speed is important to you then these later models are far more likely to be what you are looking for. In all the Canon BJC 85 is a good all round reliable printer and a good choice if you’re seeking a used option.
Outside of that then consider a newer upgrade.
