The Canon successful lineage of Pixma portable inkjet printers carries on with the iP100 the latest portable from Canon, which is an upgrade from the Canon PIXMA iP90v Photo Inkjet Printer which has become overpriced since its discontinuation. A refurbished model is fairly priced at around $110, but for a new model of this older printer, forget it.
Leading Portable
The improvements include the number of ink nozzles 1,856 to be precise, and doubled maximum resolution of dpi color to 9600 x 2400 maximum dpi. The print speed and quality have improved greatly to 20ppm black and 14ppm color, making it a competitive match for many full-size printers.
The Canon Pixma iP100 Mobile Photo Printer is compact with dimensions of 12.7″(W) x 2.4″(H) x 7.2″(D) and only weighs 4.4lbs. It certainly is rugged and delivers quality print wherever you take it. It only takes about 55 seconds to produce a professional 4″ x 6″ print and works with a connection to a digital camera and print photos directly without the need for a PC.
You might also want to purchase an optional Canon PU-200U Printer Automobile Power Unit and an optional Canon BU-30 Bluetooth Adapter that permits printing wireless from a camera phone, PC or PDA.
The printer comes with an Auto Image Fix which corrects for the best possible color, exposure, brightness and contrast on any photograph.
There is continuity in the design of the Canon Pixma iP100 Mobile Photo Printer, and it appears almost the same as the iP90v. The iP100 has a matte silver finish with side panels that are glossy black. The paper handling trays extend out of the machine. Unlike its’ predecessor, the iP100 Mobile Photo Printer has an input tray that holds 50 sheets of paper, rather than 20.
It also comes with an infrared port for IrMC 1.1 compatible cell phone connections, a PictBridge port and a USB 2.0 port. The internal cartridge system has been completely revamped with the number of nozzles jumping from 1,088 to 1,856.
The iP100 uses Canon’s Chromo Life color inks, which yield approximately 249 pages at a cost of approximately $17 per cartridge. The unit itself sells for approximately $250. With this purchase comes the PIXMA iP100 Mobile printer, setup instructions, Leopard information sheet, quick start guide, setup software and user’s guide, black and color ink cartridges, AC adapter, power cord, print head, a Bundled Media MP-101 and Sample Media-201.
The primary features of the Canon Pixma iP100 Mobile Photo Printer are its quality and speed, portability and connectivity and ease of use. The fast photo printing features is also pleasing, waiting only about 55 seconds to witness a fabulous 4″ x 6″ borderless print. It’s ideal for fun print projects, because it’s so easy to use, and it is part of Canon’s Generation Green environmental initiative.
High Cost for High Quality
The only let down with this model is the high cost which is the only let down. The base model itself is not too expensive. You can find the Canon PIXMA iP100 Mobile Photo Printer for under $220 which is not a bad figure at all.
Unfortunately the cost of being portable is quite a drain after you have added the optional Bluetooth Adapter for an extra $50 and the Canon LK-62 Printer Portable Kit Battery & Attachment for an additional $90 which is the price on Amazon.
So the realistic price for this model is around $360 to be fully mobile and that isn’t counting the optional Car battery. This tends to be the main criticism of the Canon Pixma iP100 but when it comes to the quality of the prints, there are few complaints.
Maximizing Your Print Quality
Using Canon’s best quality paper and photo paper will greatly enhance the quality of your photographs and prints. It may be more expensive but if quality is of the upmost importance to you then you should use such as Canon Photo Paper Plus Semi-Gloss Letter Size (50 Sheets) ( SG-201 LTR) which is exactly what you need to produce the highest standard of photos for around $35.
There are a variety of sizes available like Canon Photo Paper Plus Semi-Gloss 5″ x 7″ (20 Sheets) for around $10. Other sizes include Canon 8 x 10 Semi-Gloss Photo Paper Plus, 20 Sheets for as little as $5 on occasion on Amazon.
Inks
Always use Canon’s own ink as compatibles will definitely not produce the quality that a printer of this quality is made to produce. If you’re going to pay good money for a high quality printer that has such fine resolution, then of course you need the best inks to give justice to the ability to the printer.
You can get value packs of both color and black combined by buying the Canon PGI-35 Twin Black & CLI-36 Color Ink for just over $35.
Unbeatable
You will find no better mobile portable printer on the market. The price is high but so is the quality. If you demand the highest standard in print quality and are on the move often, then you will never find print quality in any other mobile portable printer to match the Canon Pixma iP100.
