The Canon Pixma series has advanced a lot since the days of the Canon Pixma iP1200 was brought onto the market. It was not really a Photo printer of note even then. It was designed to be cheap and not for a serious photo enthusiast.
Even back then using only 3 inks was considered unusual as 4 inks at least is usually the case with photo printers. However the quality of its borderless photos was good enough for most family fun and it would seem that that was the purpose it was made, simple inexpensive photographs.
With a price of around $80, naturally it was a popular choice with a good many in its time.
However finding one is an extremely difficult task and if you ever did, most likely it will be a well worn used addition. Finding a very standard and totally affordable photo printer from Canon at that kind of price may never be repeated.

A far better updated version of what the iP1200 was to many would be the Canon PIXMA iP1700 Photo Inkjet Printer which is certainly in the same price sphere but a far superior printer than the iP1200 for the same price of well under $80.
Now with 4 inks this advanced version with a color resolution of 4800 x 1200 dpi and capable of 22 ppm black and 17ppm color print speeds. Although the Ip1200 was designed to be affordable this surpasses it by a mile for the same amount of money.
Using Canons own Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering referred to as (FINE) which has advanced print head technology it produces great photos and clear documents and color prints. Fine ink technology is a multi-nozzle print engine that ejects consistent, microscopic ink droplets resulting in clear high resolution photos with clear definition and clarity.

The Canon Pixma iP1200 seems a distant memory with the advancements in technology and simply for the fact that such great models can be found at the inexpensive price that the old iP1200 used to cost.
Portable Editions
Canon has launched many new models in the PIXMA iP series and of course the standard has risen considerably. Editions like the Canon PIXMA iP90 Photo Inkjet Printer can be a lot of money as it’s a portable. Even though portable it outstrips the early Pixma models on performance.
Using Canons own FINE technology the Pixma iP90 delivers excellent quality prints and documents. It uses a print head consisting of 1,088 nozzles and has a color resolution of 4800 x 1200 dpi. Print speed was considerably faster too with 16ppm black and 12ppm for color. Not bad at all for a portable printer but not at all in the same price range.
Like the other pixma series models It can accommodate legal size even though its portable and in all an excellent photo printer but at a very high price. There is also the Canon PIXMA iP90v Photo Inkjet Printer at a better price.
The latest portable photo printer from Canon is the Canon PIXMA iP100 Mobile Photo Printer and don’t forget the battery and Bluetooth is not standard issue, it is sold separately.
So it seems the popularity of the Canon Pixma iP1200 is lost in the advancements Canon has made since then and with it still being possible to find many under $100 the performance of these later models puts the iP1200 in the shade. In the light of this, I think there are some new more popular editions from Canon.
