If you know anything about printers then you know how much variety is out there. It’s often difficult to find something that matches your wants and needs. To get straight to the point, if you’re in need of photo copies for any reason – whether you’re a professional photographer, an enthusiast or even just wants great family pictures, then the Canon Pixma series has several great options.
That said, there are still so many options that it can get confusing. To help break it down, you should continue reading this review if you’re not only interested in a Pixma series printer, but one that is portable as well. We will be looking at the Canon Pixma iP90v.
Over Priced
The Canon Pixma iP90v is an expensive option. It has been around awhile and has been superseded, and sometimes the more rare nature of the machine makes it more expensive. The Canon Pixma iP90v as a hefty price tag of well over $300.
Then you need to add the equally as expensive LK-51 Portable Kit at a shocking $300. There will be times you will find one cheaper and the best option is to buy direct from Canon. They sell them for around $100. This is a rare moment when the manufacturer is cheaper than on such as Amazon but on this occasion, it is so.
It’s already starting to seem like a bad buy when you consider that the Canon Pixma iP100 is under $200. It has a much higher resolution and speed and the photo and print performance is outstanding. The LK-62 Portable Kit is available for under $100 and the additional Canon BU-30 Bluetooth Adapter can be found for under $50.
The resolution is as high as any portable printer on the market at 9600 x 2400 dpi on color which is far superior. It has to be said that I would be inclined to point you away from the Canon Pixma ip90v in favor of other models in the Pixma series, specifically the iP100, based purely on price and it is not any reflection on its ability. It’s compact at 12.7 W x 2.4 H x 7.2 D inches and just slightly heavier than the iP90v at 4.4 lbs.
One of the greatest aspects about the Canon Pixma iP90v is that you have many printing options. For example, you can print wireless from PCs and camera phones, as well as directly from PictBridge compatible digital cameras and DV camcorders.

Capabilities
While this is a pretty straightforward and simple machine, there are some other features you should be aware of. For one, it offers tremendous speed, able to print 16 pages per minute black and 12 pages per minute color which is impressive for a portable. The resolution is 600 x 600 dpi black and 4800 x 1200 dpi on color.
It’s very good looking and often receives compliments. This might sound superficial, but if you’re in a sales meeting and someone sees you using a good looking and highly effective piece of technology, your image is only going to improve.
The inks are freely available online Canon BCI-16 Twinpack Color Ink Cartridges and the Canon BCI-15 Black Ink Cartridge (Twin Pack).
There is little wrong with this model in fact at a more reasonable price, you would be delighted. Fact is it is not available often at a sensible price.
From a PC and camera phone, you can print wirelessly via the IrDA interface. The graphics are excellent and the document standard is high also. It is an ideal compact size of 12.3″(W) x 2.1″(H) x 6.9″(D) and weighing a lightweight 4lbs.
It is compatible with Windows®7, Windows Vista™, Windows XP/2000/98/Me and Mac OS® X v.10.2.8 to 10.5. Its 2-picoliter sized color ink droplets give the print and photo quality great clarity and definition. You can use Easy-PhotoPrint software to enhance your digital photos.
Favorable Reviews
Several reviewers have stressed how pleased they have been with the ip90v’s durability and reliability. If you have had to deal with other printers in the past then you know how much this means.
Finally, this model qualifies for Energy Star status, meaning it doesn’t require a lot of energy and is helping reduce gashouse emissions.
Conclusion
As nice as this printer is and as high a quality as the prints are, there can be little logic in going backwards for more money when the newer Pixma iP100 is much better value. Unless you’re a nostalgia freak or a collector, I would recommend the iP100 any day, but I stress this is mainly based on value as there is little wrong with this printer; it’s just too expensive.
Canon has since moved its focus onto the iP100 and when you put them side by side and compare the price and the ability of both printers, realistically there is only one choice. But if you are ever lucky enough to find a model under $200 which can happen, snap it up as this is a fine printer in everything but price.
