Some printers are for basic printing needs, others are photo printers strictly designed for those who take photography seriously, there are portable printers designed for people who travel often, and of course, there are photo printers designed for home use. In this case, we will be reviewing an all-in-one Canon printer that is best suited for home use.

The Canon Pixma mp160 sells for around $90, but can be found for cheaper if you look in the right places. It has a customer review rating of 4 out of 5. This is a pretty solid rating, and it probably would have scored much higher if not for one reoccurring complaint, which will be covered below.
For now, let’s focus on the positives. The most unique feature about the Canon Pixma mp160 is that it has a Z-lid. This means it can scan almost any form of document, whether it’s an old photo, a notebook, a credit card, or even something that doesn’t lay flat. In addition to that, you can also print directly from any PictBridge compatible digital camera or DV camcorder. If you use Canon photo paper, you can expect the photo to last for up to 100 years.
Convenience is obviously a strong point for the Canon Pixma mp160, but let’s look at speed and quality. As far as speed goes, the USB 2.0 interface will allow for fast image transfers and scanning speeds. There aren’t many other speed stats available for this particular model. When it comes to quality, photos can reach resolution of up to 4800 x 1200 color dpi. Scans can reach resolution up to 600 dpi, and you will also be getting 48-bit color depth. Overall, speed and quality are strong.
How about the negatives? The biggest negative reported with the Canon Pixma mp160 has been the noise. The noise is only when the machine is first turned on and prepares to print, but it can be annoying. The other major negative is that after a lot of usage, you might run into a paper feed problem. For some reason, this has only been an issue on some of the mp160s, not all of them. A final and common negative for printers these days is high ink consumption. There’ really no way around this, other than to buy a printer that costs over $300. Those models are the only way you will get low ink consumption. But it doesn’t matter which route you take. Any printer company will make sure they make their money one way or the other.
User Review #1: My daughter is in high school and I run my own photo-related business. We both use the mp160 printer often. With me using it during the day and her using it at night, it takes a lot of abuse. We’ve had it for almost nine months and haven’t seen any problems whatsoever. The ink gets a little expensive, but I’d rather pay for quality, so it doesn’t bother me.
User Review #2: Scan. Scan. Scan. There, I just described my average day to you. I work in a very small art office and I’m the ‘do-it-all’ guy. I probably have a less admiring title when you ask others, but whatever. The bottom line is I get done what needs to be done. And I knew the mp160 would be a better option that the photo all-in-one printer we were using. Was that upgrade recognized? Who knows? At least it has made my job easier.

The Canon Pixma mp160 is a great at-home printer option. While it doesn’t do any one thing extraordinarily well, it can do a lot with very solid results. A good investment.
