If you’re looking for a printer, there are going to be a lot of options to consider. If, by chance, you’re a photo enthusiast and you still need all-in-one capabilities, then the Canon Pixma mp180 should be a model to consider. This model has similar features to the Canon Pixma mp170, which costs only $40. So, you might be wondering why this model should be considered if it costs $60 more. Whether it should be considered or not actually depends on your specific wants and needs. That’s why the primary difference is being mentioned now, so you don’t have to waste your time reading the rest of the review for no reason. The biggest difference between the two models is that the Canon Pixma mp180 has Dual Color Gamut Processing Technology. There’s a good chance that sounds like a foreign language to you. If so, it means that all copies are guaranteed to remain true to their original form. So, if high quality copies are a priority to you, then you should read on.

The Canon Pixma mp180 offers several features aside from the Dual Color Gamut Processing Technology. The most basic features are that it can print, copy, scan, and direct photo print. It is PictBridge compatible, meaning it can print photos directly from many digital cameras and DV camcorders. You can also use a memory card that is easily placed into a built-in slot. From there, select what photos you want to print from your memory card and print away. It’s also important to note that your photos will be auto-enhanced. For scanning, you can use almost any type of document. It can be thick paper, thin paper, as well as most non-paper items, even if they aren’t able to lie flat.
Convenience is obviously a primary benefit when purchasing the Canon Pixma mp180, but what about speed and quality. When it comes to scanning speed, you will be able to take advantage of a USB 2.0 interface. This allows for the fastest possible speed for image transfers. There are no concrete stats on printing speeds for this model; however, they seem to be slightly slower than the industry average. As far as quality goes, photo prints will be able to reach a resolution up to 4800 x 1200 color dpi. For impeccable detail, the print head will eject ink droplets as small as two picoliters. If you really want to take quality to another level, then stick with Canon photo paper. These photos can last up to 100 years.
As far as negatives go for the Canon Pixma mp180, they’re difficult to find. If we’re to really look hard for problems, we could say that paying an extra $60 for the Dual Color Gamut Processing Technology is questionable. But as stated earlier, it really depends on what you’re looking for and how important that feature is to you. Photo prints also seem to be slightly slower than average, but not by a lot. Otherwise, this is well designed machine.
User Review #1: The only thing I care about is high quality photo prints. I also wanted a printer that could copy, scan, etc. The Pixma mp180 seems to have been a good fit. After hearing the mp170 offers similar features and costs a lot less, I’m not sure I made the right decision. But if there’s that much of a difference in quality then I guess I did. – Betty in Nebraska.
User Review #2: Okay, let’s get to the facts. This model is a little expensive. Is it worth it? Probably. The problem with this model is that it’s too sloooooooow. However, if you’re willing to sacrifice speed for copies that are guaranteed to match the original in every way and high quality photo prints, then it’s worth the money. For me, it has been worth the money. For you, I don’t know.
