Canon Pixma mp500 – Printer, Copier and Scanner in One

If you’re currently in the market for a printer then you should seriously consider going with Canon. While there are a ton of companies selling printers these days, only a few have been around for decades and have maintained an excellent reputation. Canon is one of those companies. On top of that, it’s also a publicly traded company and has been so for many years. That alone should let you know you’re getting superior quality. In this case, we will be reviewing the Canon Pixma mp500.

The Canon Pixma mp500 sells for around $80. It has received an average review score of 3.8 out of 5. That’s a solid rating, yet not stellar. The reason for this has a lot to do with some people not realizing what they were purchasing. The mp500 is best suited for those who are looking for all-in-one capability and relatively high quality photo prints and scans. It’s not best suited for those looking for everyday printing needs, especially those who need a lot of prints in a short amount of time.

Let’s review the Canon Pixma mp500’s speed, quality and convenience features. When it comes to speed, a 4 x 6 borderless photo will take around 51 seconds. This is slightly slower than the industry average. On the other hand, for scans, when you take advantage of the USB 2.0 interface, you will be receiving the fastest image transfers possible. Scan quality is high, with resolution up to 1200 dpi and 48-bit color depth.

When it comes to photo prints, you will be getting resolution up to 9600 x 2400 color dpi. This has a lot to do with Canon’s FINE technology, which in this model’s case refers to 1,856-nozzle print head. Each of these nozzles will eject ink droplets as small as one picoliter. Based on these stats, photo print quality will be above average. The mp500 also offers a ContrastPLUS 5-color ink system, with 4 dye-based inks and 1 pigment-based ink.

One of the best features about the mp500 is the 2.5-inch color LCD display. If you slide a memory card into a built-in slot, you will be able to view and enhance images prior to printing. If you don’t want to take that route, you will still be getting Auto Exposure technology, which means all copies, will be optimized on their own.

There are a few minor negatives for the Canon Pixma mp500. One of these negatives is high ink consumption. This is something that must be accepted for higher quality. A potentially more serious negative is that there have been reports of ink smears after several years of heavy use. If you don’t plan on several years of heavy use, then it shouldn’t be a concern. The only other negatives are that it has a large footprint, it’s relatively loud, and there is no fax machine.

User Review #1: There are a lot of features for the mp500, but the one I care about most is the dual paper path. Knowing I don’t have to constantly get up to change the paper is nice. I keep the plain and photo paper in there and operate everything from my computer. I also like the LED ink tanks. No more guessing for when ink cartridges need to be refilled.

User Review #2: If you want an all-in-one (minus the fax) that can give you pretty good quality photo prints and excellent scans, then this is a good option. I constantly change my mood as far as what I’m into, so I’ve used just about every feature on there. A few hiccups here and there, but always fixable. Overall, I have been very pleased.
