Canon SELPHY CP760 Compact Photo Printer Review

Cano Selphy CP760 PrinterThe Canon SELPHY CP760 Compact Photo Printer is an upgrade (and a replacement) to the SELPHY CP740. It certainly is an improvement on the CP740 and worth considering.

It is a portable photo printer that works with either MAC computer or PC computers. You can also plug your PictBridge-enabled digital camera directly into the printer and print out from it.

Design and Features

The Canon SELPHY CP760 clearly is a small printer, measuring only 3.3 inches high by 7.9 inches wide, and weighs only 2.1 lbs. so it is portable and one which you can carry in a bag without being much of a nuisance. However, it cannot claim true portability as it is not equipped for use with a battery pack, and a user will need AC power for an all round access. This limits the use and mobility with this photo printer.

Another drawback to this photo printer is that while it claims to be compact, the area required to actually print out photographs is larger than is assumed. You need to have seven to eight inches free on either side of the printer to allow for the paper passing through the rear of the printer before reeling it back in as it processes the printing.

Canon Selphy CP760-FrontIt prints a 4″ x 6″ borderless color photo in approximately 52 seconds, up to a print resolution of 300 x 300 dpi with 256 levels of colors.

Many users of the SELPHY CP760 though have stated that there are some issues with the print quality until the color settings have been corrected.

Once the corrections are made, then the printer has a great quality output that is rivaled only by traditional photo printing.

Dye-Sublimation Printing

The CP760 uses dye sublimation technology, which produces photos with no pixilation and renders rich colors. It is a ribbon type printing where layers of color are laid down one by one to bring the image to life. The final layer is a clear coat that will give sheen to the final photograph.

Many appreciate the quality this type of printing creates and tout its inexpensive cost when compared to a standard ink jet print out. The downside to this is that you have to purchase special photo paper made by Canon for use in the CP760. Canon Selphy Cp760 User Reviews

The SELPHY CP760 is designed to print photos on different media sizes up to 4” x 8” but most likely, most users will end up using it for 4” x 6” as this is standard. But the tendency is on a four by six print, the edges can be a few millimeters shy of the actual image, thereby you may need to rescale your image before you print it out in order to get the entire image on the sheet. While this may be discouraging to some, the print quality seems to make up for the loss of image size. There are different sizes of printer paper packs available for purchase.

Canon Selphy CP760-Card ReaderIt prints directly from your digital camera or memory cards using PictBridge. It supports various types of flash memory cards: such as, MultiMediaCardplus, RS-MMC, miniSDHC, SDHC Memory Card, SD Memory Card, MultiMediaCard, Memory Stick PRO, Microdrive, CompactFlash Card, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Duo, Memory Stick PRO Duo, and the miniSD.

It also has a USB drive, and you can purchase the BU-30 Bluetooth® adapter as well direct from Canon, or at Amazon for cheaper price of $42, to enable wireless printing from your cellphones and other Bluetooth® devices.

Small Preview

It has a 2.5 inch LCD display to view the menu and the image you are printing. The downside is there is no indexing therefore if you have a long list of photos on your camera or memory card and you’re only printing a select few, you will need to keep on clicking on each file on your list before you get to the image you want. Scrolling through hundreds of photos before you find the one you wanted can be irritating and time consuming.

Summary

All in all, it seems that the quality of prints makes up for any other traits that are lacking in the Canon SELPHY CP760 Compact Photo Printer. With the options available for direct printing from the photo printer, many photos can be customized to suit the needs of the user. Simple functions such as red eye removal, the date and custom frames are available in the menu on the Canon SELPHY CP760.

There is no need to have a computer hooked up to this printer in order to use. It can be taken anywhere you wish to take and print photos at any time as long as there is a power source nearby. This is the only requirement in order to use this portable compact photo printer.

The Canon SELPHY CP760 Compact Photo Printer is still available new from $150, or used at around $50, at Amazon.
