Choosing a Mobile Printer: The Canon iP 100 vs. HP H470

Canon PIXMA iP100 Mobile Printer
If you are searching for a lightweight, versatile mobile printer then both the Canon iP100 Mobile and HP Officejet h470 Mobile printers will appear in the result set. Priced to sell at $249.99 and $199 respectively, there are significant differentiating factors besides price to consider when looking at the Canon iP100 vs. HP H470.

While the lower price of the Officejet h470 (base price is the same at $249.99 but you get a $50 instant rebate when you buy it from the HP site) along with the more affordable ink cartridges it uses give it a leg up on the Canon iP100, the lower print quality and slower print speed ultimately mean that the Officejet frequently loses out in a direct comparison.

Although at Amazon.com where you will find lower retail prices from various sellers, you may be able to get the Canon iP100 slightly less at $193.73 than the HP H470 which is selling at $203.

Users reviewing both products give the HP h470 a lower rating than the Canon iP100. An independent analysis from CNET also had the Canon iP100 coming out the winner, even though it was more expensive than the competition. The high resolution, compact size, and quick print speed are preferred by consumers in the mobile printer market.

True Portability

To achieve true portability, you normally would need your printer to work on battery power. One downside for both printers is that batteries are not included, and yet another additional cost to you. In this aspect, the HP H470 has scored points over the iP100 as for only just a little more, you will be able to get the H470wbt, which completes the series, with the battery and the Bluetooth® adapter. In the long run, the HP H470 comes out cheaper. Check out Amazon for cheaper rates.

If either a Wi-Fi adapter or a built-in multimedia card reader is a must-have, then the HP H470 is a better choice since neither of these features is available with the iP100. Users of the iP100 must print using a USB cable, the PictBridge port or the optional Bluetooth® adapter that allows for wireless printing.

Since the USB cable or the Bluetooth® adapter does not come standard with the device, there is an extra cost associated with the Canon model if you want to hook it up to your computer, wired or wirelessly. Despite this, users still continue to choose the Canon for their mobile printing needs.

HP H470 Printer

The iP100 has a superior printing speed and superior quality. The biggest complaints received from users of the HP H470 are related to print quality. With 1,856 nozzles compared to 1,072 nozzles in the H470, the Canon model clearly excels with its ability to generate high quality, detailed prints. Most consumers require that their mobile printer maintain the same level of high quality as a desktop printer with the ease and versatility offered through portability.

The Canon iP100 is not only superior with its printing capabilities; it is also smaller than the HP H470, although on weight, the H470wbt is just a pound heavier. This is another point for Canon, especially with business professionals looking for a sleek device to bring with them for printing while outside of the office.

Carrying cases for both printers are purchased separately. Many laptop bags and cases are available through Amazon.com. Click here for many choices.

Another point is that it prints quietly at 35 dbA as against the normal rating of the HP H470 at 47 dbA. As far as power consumption is considered, the iP100 generates only 9 watts on active mode and 1.5 watts on standby, as compared to HP H470’s 24 watts active, 5 watts on standby. Both manufacturers offer one year limited warranty on hardware, and one year on technical phone support.

Despite the lack of similar bells and whistles and with a design that is less sleek and more functional than the HP Officejet h470, the Canon iP100 dominates in the mobile printer market when compared to the HP h470. Even though it is more expensive, the clear differentiating factor for the iP100 is that the prints it outputs are, simply put, superior in quality.

In the mobile printer market, while some of the extra features offered by the HP h470 are appreciated, having a reliable printer that delivers professional quality documents is the winning formula.
