But the thing is, what you want may not necessarily be what you need. So let’s go through a list of guidelines so we can check whether you really need a compact printer.

Because You Have a Laptop

Well of course having a laptop is obviously a major factor. How often are you actually out of the office? Are you frequently finding yourself running around to get a print? If you’re not then seriously ask yourself whether it’s worth the expense.

Having a laptop is the key to your mobility. Without it you couldn’t perform as traveling and working is the only way for many, so working whilst traveling often the norm. A laptop speaks for itself it’s now a vital tool to so many. You could either take the things you have done in your laptop and take it to a printing shop, or you could wait until you get home and do your printing there.

Because You Have Mobile Gadgets

Mobile gadgets are known for their mobility and multiple functionalities. There are mobile gadgets that have built in word and spreadsheet processors; some have Adobe software installed in them. So it’s basically, a smaller form of a laptop. Gadgets that fit this profile are cellular phones and PDAs. If you have a lot of these like for example a laptop and a PDA, then the probability that you will need a compact printer is higher.

Because You Have a Camera

Traveling photographers would have good reason to own one, if they want to see the quality of their pictures. Instead of bringing laptops along with their camera, there are some printers that allow pc-less interfaces.

There are also those printers that have memory card slots so it is much easier to use the memory cards from your camera directly. Compact printers can surely be handy this way. If you’re a budding photographer who has a keen eye for quality, then you certainly need a printer that goes together with your camera. Get the printer that is designed for printing photo qualities.

Because You Travel a Lot

If you only do your printing at home or at the office, then buy a desktop or office printer instead. Compact printers have some features removed in order to provide handling benefits. Paper handling is reduced to a few pages. Sometimes printing speed is reduced as well. Some compact printers may have lower resolutions to keep them competitive when it comes to pricing. In short, you only need a compact printer if you travel a lot.

Because You Work At Home and In the Office

Another scenario is for those that work at home as well as the office. Maybe a small business that doesn’t use a printer industrially but has general small scale printing needs. Could be that you may have a purpose to have one and use it in the office and take it home with you where you continue to work and print.

Popular Choices

Canon Pixma iP100Canon has a good range of compact laptop printers. The Canon Pixma iP100, a very popular printer that always wins rave reviews. This popular little lightweight photo printer weighs 4.4lb and prints at speeds of 20ppm for black prints and 14 ppm for color.

Features borderless photos and is nicely compact at 12.7inch width, 7.2 inch depth and a height of 2.4. It is wireless wired and a maximum resolution of 600 dpi x 600 dpi black and 9600 dpi x 2400 dpi color.
This is one of the most popular portable compact printers on the market. It has 1 x Hi-Speed USB 4 pin USB Type B 1 x Infrared IrDA and operating systems it can use are Microsoft Windows 2000 , Apple MacOS X 10.2.8 or later, Microsoft Windows XP, and Microsoft Windows Vista.

Canon Pixma iP90Also popular is the Canon Pixma iP90. There is also the Canon Pixma IP90v but as the iP100 is an upgrade from these models there seems little point in going backwards.

If you are seeking used models then these two, iP90 and iP90v, they are likely to feature prominently as all the people that upgraded to the iP100 may be selling their old computer.

Another portable photo printer is the HP H470. Frankly to be fully portable you need the H470wbt as the H470 and H470b are not totally portable in the form that you buy them.

Would be a considerable saving to pay the $350 and be fully kitted out for portability including wireless and Bluetooth. The H470 doesn’t even have a battery and buying them separately pushes up the price considerably.

HP H470wbtIt’s a more economical buy than the Canon models. And little difference in speed. It’s a nice compact size of with a good battery life. The weight being 5 lbs and the dimensions 13.4 x 7.28 x 3.25 in. Print speed is 22ppm black and 18ppm color. That’s fairly quick and color scheme is good. Some complain about the quality of the prints and a temperamental paper feeder.

It’s attractive to look at but some maintain that the design is the most impressive aspect more than the performance. More impressive ratings are given to the old model that this was upgraded from in the HP Deskjet 460c Mobile. But there again it’s a fair bit pricier.

In all the compact printer for laptops is a useful edition to any truly mobile executive or business person, and it should start to pay you back in time and make your life far easier, having a fully portable access to print whenever you need from anywhere.
