It’s a little absurd reviewing this particular Portable color printer as there is so much against it but if you’re in a situation where you need a portable but don’t really have the budget then in such a case this could be a cheaper option.
However you are not going to have the easiest time finding one as they are long discontinued. Performance wise they are far from great and would prefer to recommend many other portable printers on the market but if you really don’t have the funds and are possibly a student or individual that would benefit from having a portable cheaply, then this could be a good option.

Inexpensive Option
The first thing that needs to be pointed out about this review and the deskjet 310 is that it is an old model. There are many of us that are not so demanding on their Portable printers and only require for light use and if that is you then this could be viable.
Online I saw them used at around $50 and refurbished at around $120. New they can cost as much as $315 but all round that is cheaper than the newer models. It may be a difficult search but they are out there.
The battery addition is also a far less expensive option than newer models so I can imagine many a student paying attention to these figures. So now you know that you’re not getting the greatest quality at least it can be affordable.
Performance wise this is a slow printer by modern standards of portable printer. As slow as 2 to 3 ppm. You also have a choice of 2 models of this printer. Model number C2621A which is a manual paper feed one at a time or with the addition of an automatic sheet feeder that holds 60 pages as in model number C2622A.
It is also not great on ink consumption but if you’re not a high volume user then this is less of a problem. It’s also a little on the noisy side.
There are still some good features for the 310. One is that it’s extremely easy to set-up and use, making it a great starter printer. As far as quality goes, you will get resolution around 300×300 dpi in letter mode.
However it is light and portable. The weight is 4.3lbs without the cut sheet feeder and with it weighs 7.56lbs. Dimensions are 2.5 H x 12 W x 5.75 l inches.
For a new battery it is also going to be difficult to obtain. You need to search out the HP C3059A DeskJet New 148639 Battery on Amazon for around $35. Also for color printing you will need to add a color kit. So if you have the patience and the inclination to work hard to find your bargain then this is a cheap option and print quality is reasonable too.
Wiser Choices for More

The popular Canon PIXMA iP100 Mobile Photo Printer available on for as little as $200.
Then add the Canon LK-62 Printer Portable Kit Battery & Attachment on Amazon for a further $90 or around that figure. I think the good sense in spending the extra is all too evident. Add a Canon BU-30 Bluetooth Adapter from Amazon for less than $50 and your fully portable. Then for the extra cost you get a hell of a lot of extra quality compared to the HP Desktop 310. Print speed is fast for a portable at 20ppm black and 14ppm color and resolution of 600×600 dpi black and 9600×2400 dpi color then I think it’s obvious that this is a great investment.

This is a highly rated printer as well as the HP OfficeJet H470 Mobile Printer on Amazon for around $178 but you will need to add the battery and Bluetooth also if required. The other option is to go for the fully portable HP H470wbt Officejet Mobile Printer which comes with battery and Bluetooth and on Amazon at around $330.

So the moral is why saddle yourself with a slow old printer that is hard to find and expensive to run when for not too much more (unless your thinking used model) you can have a highly efficient fast portable mobile printer with excellent print quality for as little as $215 on the road. There is little to separate the Canon and the HP and it’s a choice you would not regret.

Even new models are inexpensive and of a much better quality in speed and print quality than the older HP deskjet 310. With resolution of 600 x 600 dpi black and 4800 x 120 the print quality is far better and truly affordable.
On Amazon, the HP Officejet 100 is available for just over $200 and the best thing is it comes with battery included. That’s very rare and makes this printer terrific value.
So if you are in the category of student or small business on a limited budget this could well be the answer to your needs. It’s portability with quality for just over $200.
