You could also buy it new for $350, but that would be ridiculous since the technology is outdated. The only reason to buy an old printer is to save money. In the case of the deskjet 3420, you might be saving money, but if it’s still worth paying close to $85 is questionable. This machine offers some good features, but there are a lot of negatives as well. For now, let’s look at the good stuff.

The hp deskjet 3420 can reach resolution up to 600 dpi black and 1200 x 2400 dpi color. It will print 10 pages per minute black and 8 pages per minute color. These stats might not be impressive in today’s world, but they’re often good enough to get by. Since this printer is ideally built for someone who is using it for a home office or dorm room, you don’t need business-oriented quality and speed stats. Another advantage is that this machine is compact; allowing you to fit it in many places you can’t fit today’s printers.

There are a few features you should know about. There is an on-screen ink level indicator, which will keep you from wasting time and money. There is a print-cancel button, which will stop a print dead in its tracks. Prints will be done from a two cartridge ink system (black and tri-color). The input tray can hold up to 100 sheets. This machine is also USB compatible with PC and Macs.

There are some negatives to discuss. The first one is that there can be driver confusion as far as communication goes. Another negative is the high cost of ink; the cartridges are very small. When you have completed a print, make sure not to touch it right away. If you do, the ink will smudge. Also, your use of color ink will be forced if you print any images from the internet. These are some things to consider prior to purchasing, but there is one major negative that stands out above all the rest. There have been dozens of complaints that after 6 months to 1 year of use; a small plastic part that connects the printer carriage to the belt will fly off, killing the printer for good. Since this has happened to so many people, it’s something to keep in mind before buying. The only way you should consider this printer is if you print rarely. This might double your printer’s life expectancy.

User Review #1: The 3420 is easy to use, I can refill ink myself, and it doesn’t take up a lot of space. I don’t ask a lot of it and therefore it treats me well. I have heard about the mysterious plastic part flying off after a while, but I have owned my 3420 for over 16 months and have not seen anything of the sort. Based on my experience, I would recommend this printer.

User Review #2: I have always been a big hp fan, but in recent years they seem to have sold out. It’s always about what makes them the biggest profit, not taking care of their customers. This model is a perfect example. If you want to print 150 pages without any issues, you’re good to go. However, past that you better hold your breath. Mine is barely still breathing and constantly needs repair.
