If you want a good quality printer at a reasonable price, then it’s best to consider an older model. Sometimes you can find older models still selling for new on various online sites. If you’re lucky, you can find a refurbished one that will act just like new and cost a fraction of a new one’s price. Otherwise, you can buy used.
Finding an Older Printer
Always keep an eye on Amazon as often they are unavailable but constant checking could prove fruitful one day and you just may find a used or possible refurbished model at a great price.
If you choose that option, just make sure everything is operational before actually paying. This will require you to deal with someone locally. If you do buy a used printer online, make sure the seller has a good rating. Don’t use a site like Craigslist unless you’re dealing locally. Craigslist doesn’t have a seller rating system, so you won’t know what you’re getting.
Now, let’s get to the printer we’re going to review, which is the HP Deskjet 350. It has received an average customer rating, which is pretty accurate considering there are slightly more positives than negatives.

Features
The HP Deskjet 350’s biggest asset is its portability. Its lightweight (4.3 lbs), compact, and it can print wirelessly. All you need is an optional infrared adapter. You can also use the USB port to connect to a PC or Mac. These features allow you to take the Deskjet 350 anywhere.
The dimensions of 5.9’’ W x 12.2’’ H x 2.6’’ D make it one of the smallest on the market. Despite its compact size, it prints legal size documents.
It has the ability to print forms, transparencies, spreadsheets, labels, contracts, diagrams, etc. This model can only print 5 pages per minute in black and 2 pages per minute in color, but that’s often not going to be an issue if you’re usually only printing one business-oriented document
In best print mode, it will take a full minute to print black documents and color will take 2 minutes. Slow print speed maybe but it gives you a 30-page portable sheet feeder. Evidently not the choice of a high volume user; but for many people’s needs, speed isn’t a problem.
The Deskjet 350 has been battle tested again and again. It has passed with flying colors. It’s not often you find a lightweight and portable printer that can also offer durability. As far as quality goes, you will reach resolution up to 600 x 600 for black and 600 x 300 dpi for color.
You will also be getting HP’s SmartFocus feature. This means that if you print an image with low resolution, the printer will automatically adjust and enhance it for you. The duty cycle on this model is 500 pages a month. Printer memory has 512KB built in RAM and 32 KB receiver buffer.
Impressions
As with most printers, the HP Deskjet 350 does have a few negatives. One minor negative is that there is no catch tray. For example, if you’re printing from a surface that isn’t flat, there is no telling where your printed page might end up. Therefore, setting it up on a desk that has ample space in front to catch the printed sheets would be a good idea.
Two more serious negatives are that you’re required to purchase the battery and USB cord separately. This is not something customers have been happy with. However, if you’re buying used, then these items will most likely be included. But this is an issue with nearly all new portable printers on the market. Perhaps another reason why you just may be fortunate in finding a well priced used model.
Finding the correct Nickel Metal-Hydride (NiMH) 1600 mAh (6VDC) Battery may also be a problem. As there is so little information left available about this model, it could be worth making an enquiry with HP via the website as to the exact battery you require. You can find support and driver information here.
The HP Deskjet 350 is best suited for the traveler. If you’re on a budget and want a way to print from any location, then it’s a good choice. Assuming you manage to locate one of course.
