HP Deskjet 3740 – Small Compact Printer

Are you looking to buy a used printer? If so, then some may say you need your mind checking. You also have to be careful who you buy from. If you choose an individual seller, make sure they have a good seller rating on whatever site they use or that they’re local so you can check out the printer in person, but as the likelihood is that the seller isn’t local then you are taking a bit of a gamble.

Are Used Models Good Choices

Sometimes this can be a good option for such as a student who does not have the funds for a new model and they also suit the occasional user or as a backup printer.

However, very often a discontinued model bought as a new model, can be more expensive than a newer model. It would seem as a printer becomes difficult to obtain, then the price often goes up and you will often have to pay a little bit more. You are more likely to find a used model though at an affordable price.

The question is, do you really want to take a risk on a used printer with no warranty and probably lacking in performance compared to newer models which can be remarkably inexpensive anyway?

But for those that really are on a very tight budget and do not have anything near to an industrial scale demand then in some cases they are a good investment, or in other cases as a backup printer in a busy household or small business. For any other reason I would not consider telling you to buy used.

Purchasing

The HP DeskJet 3740 however is not so easy to locate, but a little easier to find is the identical HP DeskJet 3745 Color Inkjet Printer.

HP DeskJet 3745 new models, if they can be found, are available for about $128, and used models run for about $45.

Performance

Another question you need to ask yourself: is it worth the trouble when there are many new models at extremely inexpensive prices on the market that totally outperform this model? It does not fare well in customer reviews.

Although it was made as a budget printer is a printer built and designed for those who want a simple home use model, the DeskJet 3740 and DeskJet 3745 could still be defined as agonizingly slow with speeds of 14ppm in fast draft mode using black for documents.

Mix it with graphics and you will come down to 10ppm again in draft mode. A full color page will take as long as 3ppm and remember this is draft mode we are talking about.

It has a maximum resolution of 4800 x 1200 dpi. It can also print 4’’ x 6’’ inch borderless photos and up to 8.5’’ x 11’’ prints with white borders on any paper. The 3740’s best features are that it’s lightweight, compact, and quiet. It also offers simplicity and value. There is also an 80-sheet paper tray that can fold up for storage purposes.

Onscreen, there are two popular HP DeskJet features, which are the print-cancel button and the low level ink indicators. With this model, you will also get an onscreen menu where you can choose from five different print performance modes.

It’s best suited for those who want simplicity and value for home use needs. Whether its worthwhile buying one used or new in the light of what else is available is questionable.

Later HP Editions

The other way to obtain a decent quality low budget printer is to simply look. There are numerous models in the HP DeskJet range that give you great value for money and a more than decent print quality.

Look no further than the HP Deskjet 1000 Printer which at $30 from Amazon could be a much more sensible purchase.

Not quite as good a resolution as the HP DeskJet 3470/3475 models but in draft mode it has the same resolution but loses a little on maximum dpi being only 1200 x 1200. However, the speed is a fair 16ppm black and 12ppm for color docs using draft mode.

It has a modest 60 sheet input tray and a 25 sheet output tray and is easy to use and easy to set up and is an extremely compact size of 15 x 16.6 x 10.5 inches and only weighing 4.4 pounds. The HP DeskJet 2050 and 3000 models have the same specs also and are worth consideration.

Low Budget High Performer

If you have a little more demand and need more performance, then for as little as under $100 you can find the HP DeskJet 6940 Color Printer to be a good choice.

With speeds as high as 36 ppm for both color and black documents in draft mode and a good resolution of up to 4800 optimized dpi resolution for clear quality prints and paper sizes of up to 8.5 x 24 inches.

It’s not hard to see that value is out there and here are only a couple of examples. The older used printer option is fine if you’re getting a high spec model at a low spec price but as in most cases then just as good value can be found in new more up to date models if you simply take the time to look.
