If you’re in the market for a used printer, it’s often a good idea to consider trustworthy names, such as Canon and HP. Both companies have a highly regarded reputation and are often the first thought that comes to mind when people think of printers. They have both earned that reputation by simply churning out consistent quality, and although they don’t get it right every time, in general the standard of everything they produce is high, with the odd exception but generally they rarely fail.
Older Printer
HP range from low budget to top range and the ability to produce high quality rubs off on even with the low budget models. Features are dropped off to make things affordable but when it comes to print quality, they rarely fail you.
The HP DeskJet series is vast and they range again with budget models up to top range, but short on choices you are not. It may be lacking in a few features but the HP DeskJet 3745 Color Inkjet Printer still delivers where it really matters.

The HP DeskJet 3745 sells for around $100 new if you are lucky enough to find one. It’s a discontinued product from HP so chances are your best option is to buy a used one and you can expect to pay around $40 for a used model. This printer is easy to find used, but somewhat difficult to find new. Part of the reason for that is because it was built in 2004.
Performance
The good news is that for a printer built in 2004, it’s impressive. It can reach resolution of 4800-optimized dpi color and 1200 dpi black. This type of quality might not be top-notch by today’s standards, but it’s not bad either. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for the speed.
It prints 14 pages per minute black and 10 pages per minute color. This is one of many reasons that this printer is best for light printing. It’s not a printer you want to use in a busy office or for bulk printing.
One of the best attributes of the DeskJet 3745 is that it’s lightweight and compact. This allows you to store it in many places that other printers wouldn’t fit. It also gives you the option to travel with it. In addition to that, the 80-sheet fold-up tray will help you save space.
The DeskJet 3745 can print anything from a 4” x 6” to an 8.5” x 11”. There are five different print modes: Fast Draft, Fast Normal and Normal, Best as well as Max dpi. HP photo printing software that is included in the package will allow you to create reprints, enlarge photos, and produce photo layouts.
There is also an onscreen print-cancel option in case you run into a problem, as well as an ink level indicator so you don’t get stuck without ink.
There are a few negatives for the HP DeskJet 3745. One negative is that the USB cable doesn’t come with the printer, which normally is the case for HP printers. However, if you’re buying used then this shouldn’t be a problem. They should already have the USB cable and will most likely include it with the sale. This model also leads to high ink consumption, but that’s nothing out of the ordinary. In case you haven’t noticed, that’s where the printer companies really make their money; on its ink.
The 3745 is louder than most printers, which can be a big negative if you want to use it in a quiet setting. A final negative is that if there’s too much paper in the tray, you will often get paper jams. An easy solution is to not put too much paper in the tray.
New Model Alternative
As it’s so hard to find a new model of the HP DeskJet 3745 then another choice which looks identical and is easier to locate new, is the HP DeskJet 3650 Color Inkjet Printer which is something of a step up from the DeskJet 3745.
It prints faster at 17ppm black and 12ppm and matches the resolution of 4800 x 1200 dpi. It has a 100-sheet paper tray can handle photo paper nicely and a feature where as you can cancel print jobs simply like the DeskJet 3745. Of course, the beauty of a new model is its warranties. It comes with a 1 year guarantee with HP. It is a nice compact size and ideal for home use or small business use.
Both these models are compatible with the same HP 27/28 Ink Cartridge in Retail Packaging, Combo Pack ink which can be obtained in a combo pack for around $36.
You can pick up a new model of the HP DeskJet 3650 for around a little over $200 and used models can be found at around $80.
These are just a couple of the DeskJets of HP both old and one more updated than the other. HP has a massive selection of inkjets in their locker and as great as these older models are, it would be crazy to not explore the more current models.
It’s a myth to think that older printers are cheaper, as often it simply isn’t so. But for those wanting an inexpensive used printer or maybe a back up printer at an affordable price then these 2 selections as used models are great choices.
