HP DeskJet 3820 – Not the Best Choice

Are you searching for a used printer? If so, and you want to purchase a high quality item, don’t read this review. However, if you enjoy the average rant or bashing of a product, then please read on. This review can actually be very beneficial in the sense that it will keep you and your loved ones from buying it. What makes this particular model so unique is that it’s older than most used printers (2002) and it costs more ($200 new and $80 used). To give you a general idea of what customers think of the hp deskjet 3820, let’s look at the ratings 1-5 (5 being best). Ten people rated it a 5. Eleven people rated it a 4. Five people rated it a 3. Nineteen people rated it a 2. And … drum roll please … forty-three people rated it a 1! Therefore, four times as many people thought it was terrible than excellent. The 3820’s overall rating is 2 out of 5, which is very low and extremely rare.

While it will be fun to read about all the terrible things about the 3820, let’s keep in mind that some people are very happy with this model. That means there must be some positives. We’ll look at those first. The biggest positive it that if you use premium photo paper, this printer can reach resolution up to 4800 x 1200 dpi. That’s very impressive for a printer built in 2002. Another convenient feature is that it can operate on a USB and parallel interface. It’s also PC and Mac compatible. The input tray can hold up to 100 sheets and contains an envelope guide. Speed is slightly below average at 12 pages per minute black and 10 pages per minute color.

There are some other good features about the hp deskjet 3820. One is that the HP JetDirect print server supports home networking. You will also be getting HP PhotoREt III color layering technology and intuitive driver software. In addition to that, there are hp deskjet model standard features, which are a print-cancel button and an onscreen ink level indicator. These can be beneficial in saving you time, stress and money. A space-saving fold-up tray will also give you more options for storage.

Now let’s get to the negatives. The biggest negative for this model is that the gears can’t handle the stress on the printer carriage. Not only that, but the ink cartridge will slide down and jam. These two issues obviously lead to very poor durability. The logical thing to do would be to call hp. Their response? Get it repaired or buy a new one. This is not exactly terrific customer service, but hp has always been known more for their high quality products than their customer service. The problem here is that they failed to make a high quality product. As a matter of fact, it’s defective. Is it possible you will be happy with this model? Yes. But why pay more money for a potentially inferior product? The 3820 is definitely not recommended.

User Review #1: If you plan on owning a printer for about two to three months, then it’s amazing. Otherwise, you’re burning your money. What a waste. I tried to get my money back, but to no avail. Very disappointed.

User Review #2: I must be the luckiest man alive. Everyone seems to hate this model and I’ve been using it for years without any major issues. I will continue to buy hp products. I would even buy the 3820 again.

The hp deskjet 3820 is best suited for home use and light printing needs. There’s a good chance that the people who bought this model bought it for heavy usage. That’s not what it’s built for. There’s a chance this could be a good buy for some, but with so many better models out there, it probably wouldn’t be a wise choice. For similar features, better quality, and a much lower price, consider the 3740.
