When it comes to finding older model printers, you have to make sure you know everything. If you’re buying used, the first thing you need to know is who you’re buying from. Is it someone you can trust? Dealing with someone locally is ideal. This way you can check out the equipment prior to paying for it. If that’s not an option, make sure you use a website with a seller rating system. This will give you a better idea of who is safe to deal with. If you’re buying new, then try to stick with an online site that has a good reputation. Speaking of reputation, you’re going to want to buy a trusted brand name, such as HP or Canon. In this case, we will be reviewing the hp deskjet 3930.

The hp deskjet 3930 sells for around $90 new and $25 – $30 used, although these prices can vary. This model was built in 2005 and has an average customer rating of 3 out of 5. This isn’t a very high rating and there are reasons for that, which will be covered later. This model is best for people who need light printing with photo print capacity. It’s not built for speed or bulk printing. An ideal situation would be someone who is just getting familiar with printers. But let’s look at all the positive features first.
The deskjet 3930 can reach resolution of 4800 x 1200 dpi color. This is very solid quality and one of the 3930’s best attributes. One of its other best attributes is its small size. It’s very compact, allowing for easy storage and easy travel. That said, it is 6 lbs, while other compact deskjet printers are 1 to 2 lbs. lighter. The 80-sheet fold-up tray will give you even more room, but there are models that have a 100-sheet fold-up tray.
When it comes to speed, the deskjet 3930 can print 10.5 pages per minute black and 11 pages per minute color. If you purchase the HP 21 Black Inkjet Print Cartridge, you will be able to get up to 16 pages per minute black. Just keep in mind that these are optimal numbers, not average numbers. This printer is definitely on the slow side. The good news is you can print 4 x 6 inch borderless photos and as large as 8.5 x 11 inch photos with borders. The 3-ink color technology is good, but there are models that are 4-ink color systems, as well as some that can reach 6 colors with an optional print cartridge.
The deskjet 3930 is easy to setup, comes with simple to follow software, and has a few onscreen features. These features include a print-cancel option, ink level indicators, and a menu for five different print modes. The latter will help you optimize your prints’ speed and quality based on your needs.
There are a few negatives to cover. The biggest negative relates to the ink cartridges. No surprise there. HP got tricky on this one. They made the ink cartridges cheaper, but what they didn’t tell you is that there was less ink inside (5 ml). You won’t be able to get past 80 pages without needing a refill. Another negative is that this model runs extremely slow. Also, when this printer begins to break down (after about one year) it will begin to make strange and loud noises. Use that as a warning sign.
User Review #1: It ran well for a few weeks, now it’s one of the biggest headaches I’ve ever owned. I don’t understand how hp can make the 3847 nearly perfect and then build this piece of junk. Stick with the 3847. Much better printer and you can probably find it for cheaper.
User Review #2: I’m a college student taking photography as a minor. I don’t really use this printer for class, but I do use it for photos. The HP Real Life technologies feature is pretty cool. I don’t have to worry about red eye or dark areas (as advertised). The quality of the photos is very good. I do wish it ran a little faster.

The hp deskjet 3930 is best suited for someone looking for light printing. If you’re looking for heavy usage or a durable machine, this isn’t your best option. The 3745, 3845 and 3847 are all better options. If you do choose to go with the 3930, it uses a USB interface and is PC and Mac compatible.
