HP DeskJet 450CBi – Mobile Battery Powered Printer

Are you on the hunt for a used printer? The HP DeskJet 450 series has been around a long time and long since discontinued by HP.

If so, you’ve probably already discovered that there are a lot of options out there. So with that in mind I have to tell you that if you’re thinking of buying a new model, well that may not be your wisest ever decision with the HP DeskJet 450 CBi. However, a used model is not such a bad choice.

Yes, new models can be found of the HP DeskJet 450 CBi. But when you consider the slow speed and how HP have moved forward and improved their Mobile printer range, why would you want to spend your hard earned cash on an overpriced and outdated Portable mobile printer.

Availability

The HP DeskJet 450CBi is fairly expensive for a printer that is several years old but you are a little compensated by the fact that you can buy it with the battery provided. The HP 450CBi Mobile DeskJet Printer with Battery can be found on Amazon for around $350 with battery included. Used models can be found for around $75.

It’s not unusual to have to pay out that amount for a mobile printer after you have bought the optional batteries as with Canon mobile printers or even certain other HP models. It’s not so much the price is outrageous in itself, but when you consider the slow speed and older technology compared to what is now available from HP then it’s not a great buy new.

Abilities

The DeskJet450CBi can reach resolution up to 1200 x 1200 black dots per inch and 4800 x 1200 optimized color dpi (if you’re using photo paper). This is not bad at all, especially for a printer that’s several years old. When it comes to speed, this model can print 9 pages per minute black and that’s in fast print mode so higher settings of print are even slower.

The HP DeskJet 450CBi is not a bad printer at all print quality wise but the speed would be frustrating for some. It only weighs 4.5 lbs, offers very good quality prints, and you can print from a variety of sources. It also works on several interfaces, including USB, parallel, CompactFlash, and Bluetooth. However, there have been some complaints about finding the correct Bluetooth option. The 450CBi is powered from a lithium-ion battery. You will get 350 pages per charge.

So if you want an occasional printer new or used then it’s not a bad choice but the thing against it is simply that for the same money you can get better. So with that in mind my recommendation would be to maybe bypass it unless you find a good used model available. For the occasional user its fine but there is so much better value available in a new and current HP mobile printer.

Current HP Mobile Printer

This printer could quite possibly be the best value on the market when it comes to mobile portable printers. The HP OfficeJet 100 Mobile Printer is terrific value and delivers a much better performance than the HP 450 series.

With a printing speed of 22ppm for black documents and 18ppm color, this is far more like it. It can work with paper sizes from 3″ x 4″ to 8.5″ x 14″with a duty cycle of up to 500 pages per month. The resolution can reach up to 600 dpi on black prints and as high as 4800 x 1200 dpi for color.

The paper handling is small but it is a portable so 50 sheets input with plain paper is more than adequate and photo media it holds 5 sheets. It’s a nice compact size with dimensions with battery attached of 3.3 inches height x 13.7 inches width x 7.8 inches depth and a lightweight 5.5 lbs. with battery.

The best part of all is the price. You can find this model for as little as $200 and that’s with the battery and built in Bluetooth. For that money it will deliver you high quality professional prints where you can use selected notebooks and Smartphones via the built in Bluetooth and the battery will give you 500 prints on a fully charged battery before you need to recharge it.

As for inks to use with this model then you can easily obtain such as a HP 94 Black Ink Cartridge in a Twin Pack and the color HP 95 Tri-color Ink Cartridge.

For best results it pays to use the recommended inks and avoid compatible ink products as your quality will be impaired, as well as using HP’s own paper products. HP has HP Premium Plus Photo Paper, High Gloss (50 Sheets, 8.5 x 11 Inches) or HP Business Communications Inkjet Paper, Bright White, Letter Size (8.5 x 11), 500 per Ream all at affordable prices which can be found on Amazon.

Conclusion

In itself the HP 450 series of printers is adequate but as is often the case with older printers, they inflate once they become discontinued. It’s obvious really that the best way forward is to follow the advances that come over time and you even get better prices these days with new printers. Simply only consider the older HP 450 as a used model and take a look for yourself at the improvements with the HP OfficeJet 100 and get a much better price into the bargain.
