HP DeskJet 450Ci – Mobile Personal Printer

Again we present to you a discontinued printer. In this case the HP DeskJet 450Ci Portable Printer which in truth is not a great investment anymore simply because of the advancement in technology and improvement in the price with a newer model.

Used Option

However this is not saying that this was a bad printer, far from. The HP 450Ci Mobile DeskJet Printer

The HP DeskJet 450Ci weighs 4.5lbs, making it a good option for travel. The 450Ci also offers quality. For example, resolution can reach 1200 x 1200 dots per inch for black and 4800 x 1200 optimized dots per inch for color if you’re using premium photo paper. If you buy the optional HP 58 Photo Ink Cartridge, you will be able to take advantage of PhotoRet IV and six-ink technology.

With the 450Ci, you will also get a foldable sheet feeder and parallel printer cable. When it comes to speed, this model can produce 9 pages per minute black and 8 pages per minute in draft mode. These are not great numbers for a modern desktop, but are usual numbers for a portable printer that’s many years old.

There are some negatives for the HP DeskJet 450Ci. The thing with an older discontinued printer whether portable or otherwise is that it becomes more expensive than when it was current, and in some cases much more expensive. Buying a new model like the HP DeskJet 450Ci is foolhardy even though it was a fine old printer.

However, if you’re on a budget and desire a portable printer for around $60, then a used model may be worth considering. A new model at around $300 for the base model only is a lot of money for an outdated printer.

The next problem you may have is difficulty in buying a new battery. The HP DeskJet 450Ci does not come with a battery as standard and sometimes finding one can be difficult. If you search a site like Amazon you may get lucky and find HP C8222A, C8263A 2300mAh Battery for around $50.

A Better Idea

As we get up to date with the latest offering from HP, you will start to understand why I’m steering you away from a new model of an old outdated printer. The latest offering from HP is the OfficeJet 100 Mobile Printer which is not packed with features but what it does do is print at a good speed and gives you a very high print quality.

Best Value

The other thing with this model which is appealing to many is the simple fact that the price of $200 is the final price and you won’t have to shell out extra for Bluetooth adapters or batteries as they come supplied.

On Amazon, they can be found at reduced prices and it’s really your final price, no hidden surprises. You won’t find any portable printer on the market that is better value. Despite its price it does not lack at all in quality.

Quality Portable

The quality of this printer as regards print quality is surprisingly good with a resolution of up to 4800 x 1200 optimized dpi. One feature it does have is 4” x 6” color photo printing. It’s also the fastest portable printer on the market with a print speed of 22 ppm black and up to 18 ppm color.

Some would be surprised that a portable printer can be so quick but it is and the battery which is supplied can print 500 pages on a fully charged battery. It can handle various paper sizes ranging from 3″ x 4″ to 8.5″ x 14″.

With the battery fitted it only weighs a mere 5.5lbs and the dimensions are a very compact 3.3” H x 13.7” W x 7.8” D which makes it a very nice fit for the business person who has to be out of town often and can be ready for a meeting the next day by having the ability to print out documents in their hotel room saving you time and trouble.

Running costs

It can save you money by buying the cartridges in twin packs and combo packs. Your ink options for the HP OfficeJet 100 is HP 98 Black Ink Cartridge in Retail Packaging, Twin Pack at $31 on Amazon where you can make some considerable savings on replacement ink cartridges. The HP 98 can print out around 420 pages. Also compatible is HP 94 Black Ink Cartridge in Retail Packaging for $22 and can give you 480 pages.

The color options are HP 95 Tri-color Ink Cartridge Twin Pack with a page yield of 330 pages and costing $45 for a twin pack and also you can print out 560 pages by using Original HP 97 Large Tri-color Ink Cartridge in Retail Packaging for around $25.

For those that want a portable printer without costing you a packet then this is a great choice. With record speeds and a decent resolution and highly regarded prints, then maybe it’s time to move forward and leave the expensive and outdated HP DeskJet 450Ci and go for the no thrills but affordable HP OfficeJet 100.
