Are you looking for a new printer? If so, it’s often a wise idea to buy an older model. This is a good way to save money while still getting features that are closely related to the most modern printers on the market. In many cases, you won’t be able to tell the difference in quality. That said, there are so many old model printers out there that it can be overwhelming. The best way to narrow down your search is to choose a brand name. There are a lot of trusted brand names out there, but hp and Canon are always the two at the top of the list. In this review, we will be looking at the hp DeskJet 5550. We will cover positives and negatives. Hopefully, by the end of the review, you will know if it’s the right printer for you.

The hp DeskJet 5550 sells for around $200 new on Amazon; however, you can definitely find it cheaper at other online retail stores. In addition to that, you can also buy it used from an individual seller. Of course, if you take that route, make sure you’re buying from someone you can trust. Dealing locally is always a good idea. If that’s not possible, check seller ratings on whatever site you’re using. If you do buy used, you should be able to find the 5550 for under $70. To give you an idea of what other customers think about this printer, the majority of them gave it a perfect score. However, what makes this printer unique as far as scoring goes is that 23 people gave it the lowest score possible (67 people gave it the highest). There were much smaller 2, 3, and 4 ratings. This is odd because you usually see almost all the customers sway to one side. In this case, consumers have an obvious love/hate relationship with the 5550.
When it comes to quality, if you use photo paper, you will be able to reach resolution up to 4800 x 1200 dots per inch. Another interesting note about quality is that customers who own this printer are constantly raving about it. Through all my printer reviews – and there have been a lot of them – I have never seen such excitement about the quality of photo prints. So, if you’re looking for top-notch quality, this is definitely a model to consider. As far as speed goes, the 5550 can print 17 pages per minute black and 12 pages per minute color. These numbers are slightly below average.
The 5550 works via parallel and USB connectivity. You will also have optional networking if you want to link any home computers to your printer. This model also comes with the two standard DeskJet features, which are the onscreen ink-level indicator and print-cancel button. You will also have optional two-sided printing. HP’s goal when building this printer wasn’t to add new features (hence, the lack of them), but to improve ones that already exist. This might be part of the reason for the love/hate relationship. Some customers probably expected newer and better things. One thing that can’t be disputed about the 5550 is that it offers tremendous longevity.
There are a few negatives. One is that ink is expensive, but this shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who has dealt with printers before. The other negative is that if you put too much paper in the feeder, there will be paper jams.
User Review #1: Other than the aesthetics being way over the top, this is an excellent machine. I have been dealing with photo printers my entire career and this is the best I have ever seen. Kudos to hp.
User Review #2: Phenomenal. It’s durable, reliable, delivers high quality prints and there are a lot of optional settings/features. Anything under $200 is an excellent bargain.
