HP DeskJet 9650 – Maybe Too Expensive
Let’s review the HP DeskJet 9650. Before we even begin, it should be stated that only 33% of customers who own this printer have been satisfied with it. To make matters worse, it’s one of the more expensive models. For example, it cost $200 used on Amazon. While you can definitely find it for cheaper, that’s always a good barometer. It means instead of being able to find this model for $50 used elsewhere – like most other DeskJets – you will probably only be able to find it used for about $70 or more. If I were to put a value on a used unit for this model, it would be $35. That price would be higher if it were the only printer from the DeskJet series, but there are so many better options out there, and for cheaper. All that said, there’s still a chance this is the right printer for you. There are people who are happy with it.

The good news is that the HP DeskJet 9650 does offer pretty good quality. It can reach resolution up to 4800 optimized dots per inch color. It has HP PhotoREt IV and 4-ink as well as 6-ink printing. 4-ink printing is best for everyday use and 6-ink printing is best for high quality images. Resolution for text can reach as high as 1200 x 1200. Quality is not the issue. For speed, the 9650 can print up to 20 pages per minute black and 15 pages per minute color. These numbers are slightly below average.
There are a few features for the HP DeskJet 9650. You can use a USB or parallel interface, as well as the optional wireless JetDirect. The latter is probably the 9650’s biggest selling point. You will also have the option for two-sided printing, which can help save time, money, and the trees. This model offers fade-resistance. This isn’t a rarity for a deskjet, but it’s also not a feature for every single model. The 9650 can handle a lot of media, including envelopes, labels, transparencies, and much more. It can even handle 13 x 19 inch posters. Regardless of the size, you will have the ability to produce borderless images. A low-ink level indicator will keep you from ending up in a bind. You will have a warning and know when to buy more. That said, it’s always a good idea to stock up.
There are a few negatives for the hp deskjet 9650. One is that it uses too much ink. This should come as no surprise for a DeskJet printer, or any printer for that matter. Don’t think you’ll get more mileage with a Canon or Epson. It’s all the same. This printer is also slower than advertised. If you move the setting to max dpi, you might be waiting for a very, very long time. It’s rare that the biggest negative is noise, but that’s the case with the hp DeskJet 9650. It’s not just loud, but it shakes and clunks, making it sound similar to a washing machine with sneakers in it.
User Review #1: I bought this printer on a Tuesday. I packed it up and returned it Wednesday. I wasn’t happy I had to wait until the next day. I know a lack of quality when I see it, and this is one of those items. It’s not a terrible printer, but not worth the price it sells for.
User Review #2: What a shame. I was really looking forward to owning the 9650 for my local charity organization. I had heard such great things. The quality isn’t bad, but the speed isn’t very good and the noise is nearly unbearable. I’m going to call customer service tomorrow. I’m hoping they can help.

The HP DeskJet 9650 isn’t a bad option for home use and high quality photo prints. The main problem aside from the noise is that it fails in areas where other models deliver.
