Regardless of what a company tells you a printer can or cannot do, the most important information is always going to be what other customers feel about the product. This is usually unbiased information that you can use to help you decide if it’s the right option for you.

Also, at $30 new, it would be difficult to go wrong, especially for a printer that has a reputation for being extremely durable. The number one thing to remember if considering this model is that you DO NOT buy it for speed or high quality prints. You buy it for simple everyday needs and to avoid spending a lot of money.

There are a couple of tips you should know for the HP D1660. One is that you cannot buy it directly from HP anymore as it has been discontinued. However, it is available thru Amazon.com at still under $30 new. Another tip for this model is to keep the usage low. If you do, you will get better quality prints. While this printer is very durable in regards to how long it can operate (years), the quality of the prints will decrease the more you use it.

If you’re into aesthetics, this printer is definitely not for you. In other words, it’s very simple looking. If you don’t like to be frustrated during installation, either don’t buy it or have someone else install it. Installation can be confusing and frustrating. Inks are relatively expensive, but it’s not as bad as other models. If you buy new, be prepared to buy a USB cable separately as it’s not included. Expect prints to take a while to get going. This printer can also be too loud.

User Review #1: The D1660 might offer the basics, but it comes with too many headaches (and this goes beyond just the noise). I’m selling mine ASAP.

User Review #2: I bought this printer for my freshman year in college. It lasted both semesters without any troubles at all. I knew it wouldn’t be able to handle some major projects so I used a friend’s printer in those cases, but as far as simple printing goes, it’s great.

The HP DeskJet D1660 can offer great value if you’re looking for something for home or college use where requirement is at its lowest. If you need anything past that, you may need to consider other options.
