HP DeskJet D2460 – A Fairly Priced Printer

The HP DeskJet D2460 was one of those popular printers that delivered a high quality at an affordable price. It used to sell at $40 new and around $20 used. These are low numbers and probably have a lot to do with newer technology now being available. However all good things come to an end. The product has since been upgraded.

The HP DeskJet D2460, when it comes to speed, could print up to 20 pages per minute black and 14 pages per minute color. These numbers are slightly below average. This is also a big reason this printer should only be considered for home use. When it comes to quality, if you use HP Premium Photo Paper, you can expect a high quality result.

With 1200 x 1200 dpi input black and 4800 x 1200 dpi color optimized, you were getting great print quality for above what you would expect in this price range. The D2460 can hold up to 80 sheets at once. Considering most modern models can hold at least 100 sheets, this is also below average.

The D2460 is a compact model that has the ability to fold-up. This allows for more storage space. It also only weighs 7.4 lbs, making it easier to transport than most DeskJet printers. The D2460 uses USB connectivity, just like most other DeskJet models; however, it doesn’t offer any further connectivity options like many others do.

You can print a 4 x 6 inch borderless photo on this machine, as well as images as large as 8.5 x 11 inches with borders. If you want the best fade resistance possible, you have to take advantage of the optional 6-ink printing and HP’s Premium Plus Photo Paper for best results.

At that price, you would expect a few negatives for the HP DeskJet D2460. One is that ink consumption is relatively high. Another is that you might run into some paper jam problems. These are two common negatives for DeskJets.

What you have to realize, though, is that ink consumption isn’t as high for hp DeskJets as it is for models made by other brands. Another thing you have to realize is that most paper jams are caused by someone placing too much paper in the input tray. If you’re careful, you shouldn’t see many paper jams.

Fairly Priced Replacements

HP Deskjet D2660However, as they are a little hard to come by these days, let’s look at the upgrades. The HP DeskJet D2460 has been upgraded to the HP DeskJet D2560. This model has a print speed of 26 ppm black and 20 ppm for color dpi when printing from a computer with select HP Photo papers. This is quite an advancement on the old model. Resolution is unchanged as with the 80 sheet paper capacity.

However, alas these are not the easiest models to find on the market either so to be pragmatic, we shall lead you on to a model from HP that fits the same pattern and affordability as both these mentioned models.

The HP Deskjet D2660 is again improved with yet faster print speed of 28 ppm for black prints and 21 ppm dpi for color. Again this is an improvement on the other mentioned models. The great news is that the price bracket is unaltered from that of the original value for money.

One step down though is the 600 x 600 dpi for black prints but on color it’s still 4800 x 1200 dpi. This being the one thing marking it down over the other suggested models but still for black text, it is adequate.

It has an 80 sheet input paper tray with a 20 sheet output tray and can produce borderless printing up to 8.5 x 11 in.

It’s easy to use with just 3 one touch buttons. The ink cartridges are located for easy cartridge changes. The duty cycle is 1000 pages which is fine for home use. The dimensions are a compact 19.2 x 8.8 x 9.8 inches and it is a very lightweight 6 lbs.

Impressions

From studying reviews, there is a mixed reaction to the from users. Some have said it’s not good for photo printing and there is sometimes a common fault with the power button. As a home printer within this price range, this machine could be regarded as a good a deal as the HP DeskJet D2460 was.

At $40, this can be regarded as a very decent little machine for home use.

Other Affordable Options

HP Deskjet D3000HP has many other options within this category and price range. See the HP Deskjet D2680 as well as the HP Deskjet 3000.

It seems with models in this range the prices are similar and where you lose with speed, with some you gain on resolution. As home printers, they are all adequate choices at a great affordable price. Read the specs carefully available on manufacturer’s websites and decide between the higher speed and reduced resolution on black prints or the slower speed with higher resolution on black prints.

Either way all these selected models are great value with a fair quality.
