This is a review for the HP DeskJet D4160. The first thing you should know about the D4160 is that 75% of customers have been more than happy with it. It’s not the highest rating but it’s a fairly high figure. This model is no longer produced by HP but is still available from other sources.
The HP DeskJet D4160 Printer came on the market in 2004 and due to its scarcity has become somewhat overpriced and is currently available on Amazon for around $250.
At that price I cannot recommend you buy one but a used model is more realistic at $50 but all the same you can find better deals for a new printer in the Deskjet series, I shall come to that later. This has nothing to do with the quality of the machine. It’s a solid printer. It has more to do with outdated technology and mileage.

Performance
The HP DeskJet D4160 has a lot of features and a reasonable speed. It can print up to 30 pages per minute black and 23 pages per minute color. It definitely delivers on speed and that has been stressed by many owners.
When it comes to quality, the D4160 can reach resolutions of up to 4800 optimized dots per inch color and 1200 input dpi. Vivera inks will also offer good quality for text. These are very solid print quality numbers. For convenience, using the USB port, you will be able to download photos from digital cameras, card readers, and flash drives.
The DeskJet D4160 utilizes HP Thermal Inkjet Technology. There are also five different print modes, which include Fast Draft, Fast Normal, Normal, Best, and Max dpi. By choosing the correct setting, the printer will optimize your prints in regards to speed and quality.
Information on these print modes can be found with the software that comes with the printer. When it comes to photo prints, you will be able to use HP PhotoSmart Express to share, save and print photos.
You will also be able to produce borderless or photos with borders from as small as 4 x 6 inches to as large as panorama size. For 6-ink printing, you can buy the optional 348 Photo Inkjet Cartridge. If you ever run into trouble with any type of print, you can take advantage of the print-cancel button, which will halt a print right away and help save you time, paper, and stress.
Inks
It is a good cost cutting measure to buy your inks in twin or retail packages which are available from Amazon. For this model you will require the HP 98 Black Ink Cartridge in Retail Packaging, Twin Pack and value can be found with combo packs for color such as HP 92/93 Ink Cartridge in Retail Packagings, Combo Pack.
Read Into Reviews
The rating for this model is fairly good and it’s a sign of general satisfaction from users that tell its own story. But what cannot be denied is that due to its discontinuation it is high in price and therefore not the wisest choice anymore. On Amazon there are over 40 reviews for you to look over which should help give you an idea of what to expect with this model, but I would prefer to point you to some lesser expensive options.

Better Value DeskJet’s from HP
Just purely based on the volume of printers in the DeskJet series, it is always wise to see what else is available. Something like the low budget HP Deskjet 3000 Printer could be a better choice if simple and without too many features is what you require.
It’s not entirely featureless as it comes with Wi-Fi 802.11n connectivity for wireless printing. The speed is modest at 20 pages per minute black and 16 ppm color. It has a maximum resolution of 1200 x 1200 dpi and in draft mode it gives you 300 x 300 dpi.
It is strictly a home printer for occasional use with a duty cycle of only 750 pages per month suggesting that it’s not up to constant use but the print quality is more than adequate. The paper tray has an input of 50 sheets and for photo paper it can cope with 20 sheets. The output holds 30 sheets and 10sheets of photo paper.
It can print up to legal size and is simple to use and also has an LCD display and is ideal for a home user that just needs occasional prints. This is a printer with a very low price tag as you can obtain them easily on Amazon for around $40.
As for ink Extra large cartridges for convenience is available on Amazon also in the HP 61XL Black Ink Cartridge in Retail Packaging and color cartridges HP 61XL Tri-Color Ink Cartridge all at inexpensive prices.
For more performance for home and office consider the HP DeskJet 6940 Color Printer which comes with up to 4,800 dpi print resolution and a fast speed for black and color docs of 36ppm. It also has built in Ethernet, auto duplexing and is a great deal at under $100.
The DeskJet series is full of choices and variations in quality and features and buying an outdated old model such as the HP DeskJet D4160 seems a little silly when newer updated quality and more affordable models are so much more easily available.
Take a little time to look over the DeskJet series from HP as whatever your needs, you are likely to find it in the DeskJet series at surprisingly good prices.
