HP DeskJet D4260 – The Love/Hate Printer

The HP DeskJet D4260 is one of those printers that customers have a love/hate relationship with. The good news is that in this case, there’s a lot more love to go around than hate. For example, 85% of customers have been more than satisfied with this product.

That’s a very high number. While features are important, you don’t really know what a printer can offer until you get feedback from dozens of customers. Based on the strong customer satisfaction numbers, if you’re looking for a printer for everyday home, college, or small office use, you should read on.

The HP DeskJet D4260 sells for around $150 new if you look in the right places, and $50 used. For a printer that began selling in June of 2007, it has stood a good test of time, although not manufactured no longer by HP.

The D4260 is advertised as compact and affordable. The latter doesn’t really add up. The former doesn’t, either. The D4260 is 5.7 x 18.9 x 18.1 inches which is a very manageable size and weighing a little over 7lbs

Speed and Resolution

The HP DeskJet D4260 can print up to 30 pages per minute black and 23 pages per minute color. These are very good numbers, especially since this printer actually delivers on what it promises. When it comes to quality, Vivera inks will help maximize efficiency. Extra large cartridge sizes are available on Amazon. HP 74XL Ink Cartridge, Black and for color, buy the HP 75XL Tri-color Ink Cartridge in Retail Packaging.

For further enhancement and to make the best of the resolution then photo inks are available in the HP 99 Photo Ink Cartridge in Retail Packaging http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0006BB6ZG/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=mrieckcom-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0006BB6ZG .

Further Enhancements

HP Smart Web Printing will also help optimize prints based on what type of printing you’re doing. If you use HP Premium Plus Photo Paper, soft Gloss (50 Sheets, 8.5 x 11 Inches), resolution can reach as high as 4800 optimized dots per inch. You will have the opportunity to produce borderless prints and panoramas as large as 8.5 x 24 inches. If you take advantage of 6-ink printing, you will be able to help prevent photo fading.

There are several convenience features for the HP DeskJet D4260. The first and most important is that you can print photos via the USB drive or any PictBridge compatible digital camera or camera phone. There will also be an ink-level indicator to let you know when you’re almost out of ink.

The print-cancel button will help you save paper, time and money. There is a 100-sheet input tray that can hold various types of media, including envelopes, business cards, and labels. The paper tray folds up, which will increase storage space when the printer isn’t in use.

There are a few negatives for the HP DeskJet D4260. One is that ink consumption is high. This shouldn’t come as a surprise for any printer in today’s world. Buy in bulk to save money. Another negative is paper jams. Once again, this shouldn’t come as a surprise. Don’t load too much paper in the input tray to help avoid problems.

Mixed Reception

As shown above love for this printer is not expressed across the board, but that is very rarely the case, such is the nature of reviews. But what is good about this model is that it is affordably priced. On Amazon you can find the HP Deskjet D4260 Printer at good prices and used models are also available.

The HP DeskJet D4260 is best suited for those with photo print needs, but it can also handle bulk printing. This is a rare find. The D4260 is PC and Mac compatible.

Others to Look At

The HP D4360 DeskJet Printer is very much in the same mould with an 80 sheet input tray which you can conveniently fold up when you’re not using it. It produces borderless photo prints and a 4800 x 1200 dpi maximum resolution. Amazon have new models on sale for less than $120.

For those that are strictly occasional home users and require low volume use at a low budget price then consider the HP Deskjet 3000 Printer which despite its low price of around $40 comes with Wi-Fi 802.11n connectivity for wireless printing. It still manages a speed of 20 ppm black, 16 ppm color. It handles paper sizes ranging from 4″ x 6″ to 8.5″ x 14″, has a LCD display.

In the same series you can look out for the HP DeskJet D4263 and the HP DeskJet D4268 but they are not commonly available. These are just a few suggestions in the Desktop series. The HP DeskJet D4260 is a worthy printer and falls into what would seem to be a rare category of old yet inexpensive. Time and again you come across older models that inflate when they are discontinued, however the HP DeskJet D4260 has not fallen too much into that category and is still worth looking for.

As regards user’s reactions to this model, the love seems to outweigh the hate which is a good sign of its worthiness.
