These days, there are many excellent laser printers for sale. That said, I’m only going to focus on two of them in this article. The two models I’m referring to are the Brother HL-2170W and the HP LaserJet P1006 Printer. It should come as no surprise that the two brand names being mentioned here are Hewlett Packard and Brother. I don’t work for either one, but based on reviews I’ve done for all their models, they certainly have a tendency to be consistent. Both HP’s and Brother’s printers often have above average speed and quality stats, a lot of features, and sell at reasonable prices. Brother also has a reputation for excellent customer service. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same for HP. If they have a fault, it would be their lack of quality customer service. Part of the reason for this might be because they’re ahead of the industry in every other category, so they don’t need to focus so much on customer service, whereas other printer companies use customer service as a way to climb the ladder. In this case, HP doesn’t sit at the top of the ladder, Brother does. In other words, while both of the laser printers listed below are recommended, I’m going to save the best for last.
The HP LaserJet P1006 has a list price of $232, but it can be found for as low as $85 on Amazon. You can also buy a used model for $80, but you might as well pay the extra $5. When it comes to speed, the P1006 can print up to 17 pages per minute. The first page out will only take 8.5 seconds. Print resolution can reach as high as 600 x 600 dots per inch (1200 output). The P1006 has a 150-sheet paper tray, as well as a 10-sheet priority tray. It offers USB connectivity.
The dimensions for the P1006 are 13.7 x 8.8 x 7.6 inches and it weighs 17 lbs. It began selling in May of 2008, so it’s relatively new. This printer is best suited for workgroups that require high volume. It can handle up to 5,000 pages per month. Minimum print size is 3 x 5 inches and maximum print size is 8.5 x 14 inches. This model also contains a 266 MHz processor. For convenience, there’s a print-cancel button right on the front. The P1006 is PC and Mac-compatible. 69% of customers have been more than satisfied with this machine.
The Brother HL-2170W has a customer satisfaction rating of 90%. And this was with a 466-person sampling. That’s not just impressive, it’s almost unbelievable. It has a list price of $299, but sells for as low as $110 on Amazon. Refurbished models are currently selling for around $85.
The HL-2170W is a laser printer with wireless and wired network interfaces. It can print up to 23 pages per minute and it will be operational in less than 10 seconds from when you turn it on. Print resolution can reach as high as 2400 x 600 dots per inch (black and white). The 2170W has a 250-sheet capacity. There’s also a bypass feeder for envelopes and letterhead. This machine has 32MB of memory. It can handle legal and custom paper and has connection options of USB, Ethernet, and 802.11b/g. It’s easy to set-up and use. A Toner Save mode can also prolong your work without unwanted interruptions.
The HL-2170 qualifies for Energy Star and is PC and Mac-compatible.
