In the one corner, weighing in at 14 lbs, also known as the Miracle Monochrome Machine, is the Samsung Ml-1630 Monochrome Laser Printer.
And in the other corner, weighing in at 17 lbs would have been the HP LaserJet P1006 Printer, still available but now this model has since retired. If you’re a big lover of this discontinued printer, they are still available at Amazon, and as always with Amazon, you need to keep checking as the prices vary all the time.
At the time of looking, there were a few available new at $100; however, generally, they are available at the $225 price bracket. You can also keep checking for refurbished models.
It was a fairly popular model with dimensions of 13.7 x 8.8 x 7.6 inches and weighing 17 lbs. It scored well for having a low noise level. It can print from a USB, and is PC- and Mac-compatible. Has a decent speed of 17 pages per minute. The paper handling is 3″ x 5″ to 8.5″ x 14″; with its duty cycle up to 5,000 pages per month.
New Contender
But with many, discontinued models not being so easy to buy spare parts for, it would concern some and they would not be comfortable with an out-dated printer. So for that reason, we switch the attention to the upgraded version, the HP Laserjet PRO P1102W Printer.
So this is all about the one that’s been around awhile, and the new kid on the block. The early part of the duel will be about price, speed and appearance, whereas in the later stages, it comes down to overall quality and performance.
The Samsung ML-1630 is an extremely attractive printer with a list price of $199.99 and can be found cheaper by the usual means such as Amazon from reliable suppliers but incurring shipping charges. There are lower prices from slightly lesser rated suppliers.
And if you’re looking to buy a refurbished model, they’re currently selling for as low as $90. A used model can be obtained at $59. Of course, these prices are subject to change. Amazon is by far the most popular online retailer in the world. This leads to heavy volume and constant changes in what is available and at what prices.
The HP Laserjet PRO P1102W Printer can be found significantly cheaper at prices around the $100 range plus shipping. Refurbished and used models are available which is surprising for a relatively new model.
Who Wants One
In many establishments such as car servicing and even warehouses and many other fields like small businesses, they don’t really have need of color printing. They just want a quality printer that does just what they want it to do. Why pay for features you never need.
Something like a simple one cartridge type of printer. Just keep thumping out those invoices when needed. That’s a good example of the client group that would be looking at one of these models. The $200 dollar price range as a good average has them both with a reasonable price tag on them.
It’s an advantage if they are fairly light weight and compact so they can be transported between home and office with ease.

The Battle Begins
So to hold these two models up next to each other we see that the newer HP Laser Jet Pro wins on print speed and both have identical resolution. It also has a much better paper handling input. The duty cycle is identical as well.
The Samsung scores well on noise. It’s regarded as an extremely quiet printer which is exactly what you want if you have to work next to it all day. The HP forges ahead on the weight and the killer blow over the Samsung is that the HP Laser Jet Pro has fast Wi-Fi.
Touch sensors are also a nice convenience and add to the simplicity of the machine of the Samsung. But the HP hits back with another advantage, which is duplex or double sided printing.
In fact, HP has really notched it up over the model it has replaced. They have speeded it up and have made it even cheaper than the older version. The Samsung also loses out on print economy and all in all in this contest, there is only one winner.
The later HP model has simply more function, speed and print quality although neither is bad. Then when you consider the Wi-Fi as well it moves far ahead in this race.
Lovers of the HP Laser Jet P1006 could not fail to notice the all round improvements made on this model. Prices are similar but the HP wins this particular battle.
