If you need prints while on the road and appreciate convenience, then you need a portable printer. At one time, portable printers — otherwise known as printers portable — were very expensive. Why? Because they were something new. In case you haven’t noticed, new technology always costs a fortune. To play this trend correctly, it’s always best to wait. The prices will come down significantly. For example, look at what happened with the i-Phone when it came out in 2007. Its opening price was $699. When they weren’t selling enough units, they lowered the price by $200 only a few short months later. The original buyers weren’t very happy about this, but that’s what they got for jumping the gun and needing to be the first people to have the next ‘in’ thing. If you’re going to do that, you have to expect it to be expensive.
If you’re interested in purchasing a portable printer, then luckily for you, they have already been through that stage. There are certain models that offer fresh technology and sell at a premium, but we’re not going to focus on those models right now. We’ll go over the basic expectations you should have for portable printers and briefly cover two models.
One of the most important features for portable printers is weight. Even if a machine has much fewer features than another, if it’s lighter, it will often cost more. To put it simply, you must pay for less. This might not make sense at first, but you’re actually paying for convenience. When you’re traveling, you’re going to appreciate having something that’s easy to transport and doesn’t put a lot of wear and tear on your body. It’s also more difficult for designers to put so much information and so many features into a small machine. So, you’re paying for that as well. Most portable printers will weigh between 4 lbs. and 6 lbs. However, there are some that weigh as little as 10 ounces and those that weigh over 10 lbs.
Portable printers will usually not offer high quality, and they almost never have good speed numbers. That said, there are exceptions to both of these rules. One exception as far as quality is concerned is the Canon iP100. Prints on this 4.4 lb. machine can reach color resolution as high 9600 x 2400 dots per inch. These are not just good numbers for a portable printer, they’re sensational. This is probably why the iP100 is so incredibly popular amongst people who travel often, especially those who are traveling for business purposes.
If you’re looking for a portable printer for personal use, then you should look into Canon’s Selphy cp760. It only weighs 2.2 lbs. However, print resolution will only reach as high as 300 x 300 dpi. This is the primary reason it’s cheaper than the iP100, even though it’s weighs less.
When it comes to popular printers portable, Canon is the winner. Not only do they have the best models, but they also have the largest selection. While you can go to Canon’s website to gather more information, you will usually find better deals on Amazon. The price difference won’t be extraordinary for new models, but Amazon will have refurbished and used models for sale as well. For the best value, refurbished is always the way to go.
