Samsung CLX-6200FX Printer Review

The Samsung CLX-6200FX printer functions as a laser printer, a laser copier, a color scanner, and a fax. The problem is that it is no longer on sale from Samsung and it is difficult to find anywhere. However where one can be found it is likely to be over priced as the scarcity has inflated the price.

You used to be able to find this model at around $800, but those days are gone. So the next obvious step would be to recommend you another Samsung laser color all in one but that won’t be easy since they are not currently selling one. However as with many retired models, there are more reasonably priced used and even better refurbished models on the market at reasonable prices. I will come to that later.

Purchasers are split when reporting about their overall satisfaction with this printer, and, as with any product, both pros and cons exist for this machine. The Samsung CLX-6200FX was created with the Mac in mind, as it works extremely well and in sync with Macs. However, it supports both Macs and PCs, and set up can take as little as 5 minutes with the installation disk. This printer is fairly quiet when running, and cannot be detected at all when not printing, scanning, faxing, or copying.

Technical Details

Many users like the software that will allow faxing a document straight from the computer. Instead of printing a document and then faxing it, you can have the computer “find” the printer, and then any document can be directed to the fax driver to be sent via fax (as long as your unit is hooked up to a phone line).

It claims to print letter size both black and color at 21ppm and it copies at the same speed also. The first out speed for both the copier and scanner is around 25 seconds. The resolution for the printer is up to 2,400 x 600 dpi and scan resolution 600 x 1200 dpi and the fax modem speed is 33.6 Kbps.

It can auto duplex in print and copy and you can scan documents and save them directly onto the USB drive. It has 250-sheet cassette and a 100-sheet multi-purpose tray. The scanner is a color flatbed with a glass size of 11.38 inches with an effective scanner width of a maximum of 8.2 inches.

The monthly duty cycle is 65,000 pages and for size it’s a fairly large 18.4 W x 25.4 H x 19.6 D inches

Unlike previous Samsung printer models, this model has four different toner drums, which speeds up printing time. Full specs are available here.

Refurbished Advised

I could not seriously recommend for you to pay for more than you need to for a somewhat outdated and what some would call problematic printer. Its performance is not bad by any means and at a price nearer to $800 new then maybe, but the new models of the Samsung CLX-6200FX Color Laser Multifunction Printer change hands a pricey $1400. However refurbished models are often a good investment and there are several of those are available from $310.

Possible Problems

A few things to check on are toner availability which is a drum. Before you purchase a refurbished model, check with the seller about toners. Information was hard to come by so one can assume that there could be an availability problem.

Another consideration is that not all the features are compatible with Windows 7. So, if you are using Windows 7, or plan to continue using this printer for several years and new Windows versions come out, you may not be able to access all your functions.

It doesn’t fare too great in reviews and it may be worth looking elsewhere. A good old printer which has possibly had its day.

Wiser Choices

There are more affordable and just as good color laser all in ones with as much function and at a far more sensible price on the market such as the Canon Color imageCLASS MF8050Cn All-in-One Laser Printer for under $500.

Check over the Brother MFC-9970CDW Color Laser All-in-One with Wireless Networking and Duplex for around $600 and can automatic duplex print/copy/scan/fax and print and copy at the speed of up to 30ppm/cpm as well as a 2400 x 600 dpi resolution.

Brother has become kings of the small business multifunction color printer and they don’t do so badly with models for a little bigger business either.

There are so many choices for small and larger businesses out there then it just seems a little bizarre to pay extra for something that has been surpassed and can be obtained so much cheaper.

Check out good buys like the HP LaserJet Pro CM1415fnw Color Multifunction Printer.

Keep current and enjoy the easy availability of inks by not purchasing an antique. Older printers are fine but not when the price rises with the years. And remember to use the paper and inks recommended by the manufacturer to bring out any printer’s best qualities.
