The Samsung CLP-315W color laser printer is said by many to be one of the best available within its price range, which is usually under the $225 mark. However, is it that good of a device?
Samsung is well known for their products from cameras to mobile phones, TVs to home appliances. They also have a choice of printers which are dependable as you would expect from a brand like Samsung.
Features
This printer is “network ready” with Wi-Fi (802.11b/g) and 10/100 Ethernet, which has been generally well received. Not the quickest by any means, up to four pages a minute for color prints and 17 pages a minute for monochrome, with first print out in less than 14 seconds for black and 26 seconds color. The print resolution is up to 2400 dpi.
There are many laser printers in the same sphere that are faster, but speed isn’t everything, dependent on the kind of use you have in stall for it.
It’s also not the lightest at 30 pounds, so it is not exactly what you would call a portable device. However, it is quite compact so it sits well on an unused corner of a desktop with it being a relatively small 15.3 W x 12.3 D x 9.6 H inches.
It has a modest input tray holding 150 sheets and the output tray containing 100 sheets which is adequate for most needs and a 20,000 a month duty cycle. It can print on to plain paper, envelopes, transparencies, labels, and card stock.
Duplex printing has to be done manually but duplex printers are somewhat more expensive than this model so no surprises there.
It’s easy to set up and has an instruction manual which comes with the unit and simply following the guide, you can expect a “quick set up” and directions for anything else needed, including the networking.
The operating system is compatible with Microsoft Windows XP/Vista, Mac OS X, and Linux.
It’s an attractive and quiet machine which is popular with many and the cartridge is expected to last for 1500 prints using black. The colors are vibrant and text clear.
However this is not everyone’s experience with this particular model.
Reviews
The main gripe from reviewers seems to be that the manual is not clear about needing a static IP address when setting it up in a network, so we are warning you. If you’re not familiar with such matters, this may cause a little difficulty so have somebody on hand that has knowledge of these matters in case you experience problems. The biggest aggravation seems to be from Mac users who have expressed set up problems.
However although not the quickest the quality of print is generally appreciated by the users that have reviewed this model. Sadly insufficient detail in manuals is an all too common complaint and it’s not just Samsung that have the finger pointed at them. Expect a few teething problems.

In all, this printer does the job asked of it. Print quality of color prints and photos are less than average as compared to the usual inkjet printer, but black and white prints are about the same. This is to be expected from a laser printer.
As for the refill toner, it is just as expensive as any other is but seems to run out quicker than any other model, too. This is a decent model for a Samsung CLP-315W color laser printer and considering the price and the fact that it is a laser printer, you cannot complain.
Samsung’s Other Offerings
Samsung has a foot in many markets but they have a useful if not huge range of printers including laser printers. They are an environmentally conscious company incorporating technologies into their products that reflect this and they are affordable.
Their other laser printers of a similar ilk to the Samsung CLP-315W are the Samsung Color Laser Printer CLP-325W which you can connect to a wireless network with the touch of a button. It uses a polymerized toner giving you great quality prints and is a little heavy but still compact. This model can be found at under $150 making it great value for money also.
If a small laser printer is what you require then there Samsung CLP 300 Mini Personal Color Laser Printer could be just what you’re looking for if you have a few extra dollars to invest. Available at around $550.
It also has a speed of 16 ppm black and 4 ppm color and a resolution of 2400 x 600 dpi. It has the same capacity of input tray 150 and output 100 and this also only does manual duplexing. First print in black comes out in 14 seconds and color 26 seconds. It has very similar specs to the other models reported here but the extra cost being largely down to the handy compact nature of this model.
For a small business or home user, this is not a bed choice and once any teething problems in set up are overcome, it’s unlikely you would be regretting investing in a lesser known brand.
