Features and Benefits

  • It does much more than simply just print. It can also scan, fax and copy just about anything and do so over a network very well. This particular model’s advantages include duplex printing (printing on both sides), low noise printing, smudge-free prints, a paper cartridge holding up to 250 sheets of paper and output tray holding 150 sheets.
  • This model weighs 32 pounds which is not too heavy. It’s a nice small laser printer at 17.5″ W x 16.2″ H x 15.6″ D. This is an excellent workgroup printer and not too big considering it’s a multi-function all-in-one printer.
  • The real advantages to this printer correspond mostly with the manufacturer’s claims. For example, the duplex printing setting is quite easily enabled and works very fast. It’s economical with the ink cartridge giving you 2000 pages and runs on a single cartridge.
  • Duplex printing usually comes at a higher price than this model and is usually a feature of higher end models. It is also a very quiet printer with a 50,000 page monthly duty cycle. It has a lively print speed of 30 ppm with a first print out speed of just 8.5 seconds. It is perfect for a busy office that’s in a hurry and doesn’t need a backlog of queued prints.
  • Another nice feature is the GUI control panel, meaning it uses images instead of text, which in many cases enables staff to learn quicker and easier.
  • Another great feature of this all-in-one is the fact that the resolution of the prints is a massive jump in quality. At 1200 dots per inch by 1200 dots per inch, this outperforms a lot of monochrome all-in-one printers of this price range. Many inkjet printers in monochrome only give you 600 dpi by 600 dpi.
  • This device also has an automatic feeder and can handle most standard print sizes. It actually prints envelopes much better than other printers do. It has a 128 MB memory upgradeable to 384 MB and also PCL6 emulation.
  • The USB port allows you to print files from and scan directly to a USB flash drive. This enables you to fax directly from your PC.
  • As for the networking capabilities, it is compatible with an Ethernet 10/100Base-TX for Ethernet/LAN cables and with USB high-speed 2.0 ports. The problem with this networking usually is the setup, which is better performed with a static IP address because a dynamic one will give any user a problem connecting.

User Reviews

The scanning feature works great over the network, once you can figure how to set it up. One of few grumbles about this device is the lack of proper documentation. While it does come with an instruction manual, it is lacking in information, to say the least.

The instruction manual is a bone of contention with many users based on reviews from purchasers.

When it was consulted for the networking phase, some complained they still needed to call customer service to get the process straightened out and put into understandable terms.

Some expressed they could not follow and complete the instructions. Some also criticize the technical support as unhelpful and that the setting up the network system has incomplete instructions.

The same criticisms are made about enabling the duplex claiming that the instructions are difficult to understand. The truth of the matter is that this model has few disadvantages, so long as you know how to set it up without having to look at the manual. It may be tricky for some beginners and some would not recommend it based on these difficulties, but if you have an IT friend to help you its most likely not a big deal.

Often the reviewer can be damning where as all along they haven’t read the instructions rightly and go on to blame the product so draw your own conclusions. Its various instruction manual snags and lack of information can cause the inexperienced user to want to replace it with something easier to use and set up.

While the functions of the Samsung Monochrome Multifunction Laser Printer (SCX-4826FN) and features are exciting and perfect for any small printing job, its quality is unsurpassed for a monochrome printer in this price range.
