Canon is ahead of the competition when it comes to high quality print and innovation. Nobody really thought anyone could come up with a portable mobile printer to match an office inkjet but Canon has. Their nearest rivals in this field are HP and they have produced some excellent models too in portable mobile printer technology, but for supreme print quality then Canon has eclipsed them.
A Little History
Canon is a Japanese company founded as far back as 1937 with their headquarters in Ota, Tokyo and has a net income of $3.044 billion and employs as many as 198,572 people worldwide. They are major players in many fields like imaging and optical products, including , photocopiers, cameras, camcorders, steppers and computer printers. They are not up and coming; they are at the forefront. The same could be said for their latest mobile printer, the Canon iP100.
Canon has been proficient in portable mobile printer technology for awhile including their Selphy series which includes high quality photo printers. The journey to the iP100 started with the iP70 then the iP80 and before its latest editions, the Canon Pixma iP90 and the Canon Pixma iP90V.
Innovative Canon
The Canon iP100 is a compact 12.7 W x 2.4 H x 7.2 D inches weighing around 5lbs with the battery which serves up incredible quality photographs and graphics with a very high 9600 x 2400 dpi color resolution. It has a 5 color ink system with 4 dye inks and a pigment black ink. The print head technology consists of 1,856 precision nozzles which can deliver ink with droplets as small as 1 picoliter which is what makes them the leading portable mobile printer manufacturer for clear and crisp text and realistic and striking photographs.
Features
It can print a 4” x 6” borderless photo in around 50 seconds and documents at a decent 18ppm for black documents and 14ppm on color. It is compatible with OS Windows®7, Windows Vista™, Windows XP/2000 and Mac OS® X v.10.3.9 to 10.5.
You can print wirelessly using the optional BU-30 Bluetooth Adapter available online at under $50 enabling you to print wirelessly from a PC, PDA or camera phone or digital camera and print photos without requiring a PC.
Your other wireless option is using IrDA connectivity. It uses an Auto Image Fix feature which corrects pictures to enhance color, brightness and contrast. It will accommodate letter and legal size as well as Credit Card size (2.13″ x 3.39″), 4″ x 6,” 4″ x 8,” 5″ x 7,” 8″ x 10,”. The software provided is a CD-ROM including Printer Driver, Setup Software and User’s Guide, Easy-PhotoPrint EX.
Highly Regarded
It is a very well received printer all round and received 2011 Readers’ Choice Award for Service & Reliability from PCMag.com for Printers for 8 years in a row including 2011 and won the CNET Editors’ Choice, the well known review site in 2008.
Based on the Amazon user review star system, it seems to be extremely popular with the majority of its users with out of 151 reviews it was given a 5 star rating by 85 user reviewers and 4 stars from 36 which seems to suggest a very high approval rating.
The Cost
It is regarded by some as a little high in price but I personally beg to differ. With such high print quality the price of the base unit Canon Pixma iP100 Mobile Photo Printer is less than $200 on Amazon.
Where the displeasure is expressed frequently is the high cost of the LK-62 Portable Battery Kit which can be found for around $90. Of course add the $50 for the previously mentioned Bluetooth adapter and it does become a little pricey. A useful addition is the Car Battery Charger PU200U is available on Amazon as well.
Inks and Papers
The inks are modestly priced and considerably lower than the retail value on Amazon. A Twin Pack PGI -35 black / CLI-36 color pack can be found there for around $33 and individually PGI-35 black ink cartridge can be found for $12.99 and the CLI-36 Color Ink Tank can be acquired for $17.
Canon recommend for you to get the most out of your pictures by using ther own brand paper such as the various size Canon Photo Papers such as Canon Photo Paper Plus Glossy II for your
4”x 6” borderless prints or for letter size prints; and Canon Photo Paper Glossy, 8.5 x 11. There are many selections of Canon photo papers and plain paper online.
Best Choice
It is not the fastest Portable Mobile Printer on the market but if speed is important with a mobile printer I would be surprised. You can obtain a faster speed from the HP OfficeJet 100 Mobile Printer, but for quality of print, the Canon Pixma iP100 Mobile Photo Printer is in a league of its own. It will not be behind your office inkjet printer in any way when it comes to print quality.
A little expensive maybe but worth its weight in gold.
