Setting Up
The setting up of this model is simple and if you follow the guide below you should have little problem.
When you have a wireless printer setup, such as the Brother MFC-490CW, getting it ready to use can be an easy task so long as you know what you are doing and have an instruction manual in front of you. However, using the following steps as a guide, this task should be as easy as turning your computer on eventually.
If you use cable or DSL, as most do, you will want a combination modem and router of the wireless variety; any will do so long as it is a standard 802.11 b/g compatible model to match the printer’s connectivity.
In addition, all devices which will connect to use the printer must also be compliant with the 802.11 b/g standard to work with the wireless Brother meaning you will need compatible network cards.
- First of all, be sure your computer and router are in good working order with service and wireless connection.
- Then, set up the printer in relatively close proximity to the Internet connection or the router so if you need to test it with a wired connection you do not have to run too many cables around the house. You can always move the printer once you have established a wireless connection.
- Then, using the software that comes with the printer, insert it into the computer’s VD or CD ROM drive and allow it to play. This will install the drivers necessary for the printer’s use.
- Next, if you have a “SecureEasy Setup” compatible router or if you will use the WI-FI protected access or the AOSS access, which many of the newer versions use, then press menu on the printer, use the arrow keys to chose “Network” then use the arrow keys to choose ”WLAN”.
- Next, use the arrow keys to choose “SES/ WPS/ AOSS” and then when the menu selection “Network I/F switched to Wireless” is available, enter the “OK” option to start the wizard which will guide you through the rest of this setup.
- The printer then finds an access point for the wireless signal, which will be your router and when it does, it will show the word “connected”.
- If anything else shows in the LCD screen then the connection did not work and you will need to repeat the steps, trying different locations for the printer until it connects to the router. Even something as little as a metal desk can skew the signal enough so the printer will not connect.
- After the printer connects, you need to add the computers to the printer’s network. Going to the control panel, double click on the Printer icon. Select “add printer to network” and share the printer to the computer.
- This needs to be done for all computers using the printer. After you have shared the printer to all computers, you are ready to print wirelessly and the Brother 490cw Wireless Setup is complete.
