Canon Got Nothing On HP – Battle Of The A3 Inkjet Printers

In the past there has been Frazier vs. Ali, Mac vs. Microsoft, and USSR vs. USA. Well, not as dramatic maybe, in the printer world, we have Canon vs. HP. Both encroach on each other’s territory and try to outdo each other and have been going at each other since they became the market leaders in the printing industry.

Whatever one of them comes up, you’ll be sure to have an alternative from the other side. So let’s see what both companies have come up when it comes to A3 inkjet printers. The headline is to catch the eye but in truth, these two giants rarely have much of a gain over the other in any department. They are breathing down each other’s necks in most ranges and markets.

Some Contenders

In reality, they are both close in performance and consistency, as it mostly is in all fields with these two major players, and it is no different with an A3 inkjet printer . The HP Officejet Pro K8600 Printer, a now discontinued model, is a good opener as a good quality and inexpensive A3 inkjet printers. Prints both A3 and A3+ (13’’ x19’’).

The DN version has network and duplex printing capability.

It’s certainly not lacking in speed and capable of print speed, giving you 35ppm in both black and color which is impressive. Maximum 1200 dpi resolution on black and using HP recommended paper, you can achieve 4800 x 1200 dpi on color. It can print in duplex if you purchase the DN version, and on paper handling it has a sheet capacity of 250.

It is suitable as a workgroup printer, and fairly standard dimensions of 24 (W) x 15.9 (D) x 8.8 (H) inches. The weight is a sturdy 28.7 lbs.

The important part for many of us is the price and a little sniffing around can often obtain you good results and the HP Officejet Pro K8600 Printer can be found for as little as around $280. An excellent price for an A3 printer of this quality.

Canon’s Offerings

[-image-link asin=”B001R4BTIA” alt=”Canon PIXMA Pro9000 Mark II Inkjet Photo Printer (3295B002)” src=”” align=”right” width=”160″ height=”160″]The Canon PIXMA Pro9000 Mark II Inkjet Photo Printer is a little pricier but it is a printer that offers great quality. The makers claim that the photo prints will last 100 years if stored in the right manner. Canon are great technical innovators. It uses an 8 dye system giving your prints a wider color sphere and your prints dry quickly. It has 1644 nozzles and you can even batch print your photographs.

It’s an easy to use A3 and A3+ printer which also gives you 2 paths with a front feeder for heavier paper and direct print with PictBridge. Strangely, Canon does not declare normal print speeds on this model and only specifies that 8″ x 10″ Borderless Color Photos can be printed in 47 seconds, and an 11″ x 14″ Color Photo on 13″ x 19″ paper prints in 1 minute and 23 seconds.

The resolution is detailed though claiming a maximum 4800 x 2400 dpi on both black and color. it can handle up to 150 sheets with dimensions of 26.0″ (W) x 13.9″ (D) x 7.6″ (H) and weighing 32.4 lbs.

The Canon PIXMA Pro9000 Mark II Inkjet Photo Printer is widely available and can be found on Amazon for around $350. Again a good price for such great professional quality color prints.

It offers built-in Ethernet connectivity as well as built-in Auto-Duplex for those requiring double sided prints.

Claims to offer laser quality and can print both A3 and A3+ size prints. a 4″ x 6″ Borderless color photo can print out in around 44 seconds. Canon prefers to refer to print speeds in IPM as opposed to PPM. This makes direct comparison difficult but the figures they quote are 10.2 ipm and 8.1 ipm color.

It has 3,584 print nozzles and a resolution of 600 x 600 dpi black and 4800 x 1200 max dpi color. Again has auto sheet feeder which can support duplex printing and handle 250 sheets. the dimensions are 25.5″(L) x 20.4″(W) x 10.2″(H) and weighing 43.7 lbs.

Shopping online you may find a Canon PIXMA iX7000 Inkjet Business Printer at around $189.

HP The Last Word

[-image-link asin=”B002E1RITO” alt=”HP Officejet 7000 Wide Format Printer (C9299A#B1H)” src=”” align=”right” width=”160″ height=”160″]Having featured Canon twice, we leave the final say to HP. A good consideration would be the HP Officejet 7000 Wide Format Printer. This is a workgroup printer again capable of A3 and A+ size printing. This being a cheaper alternative than the others chosen here and terrific value for money if not all of the features of the other A3 printers featured in this article.

It is fairly quick in draft mode giving you 31 ppm black and 30 color and the resolution is a credible 600 x 600 dpi in black and 4800 x 1200 max dpi color. It also has a maximum sheet capacity of 150 sheets and also covers both A3 as well as A3+ paper print size.

They claim to be economical in cost per page, assuming you use HP inks, and also claims to be energy efficient, with it being 40% cheaper to run than a laser jet up to letter size. Not as many features such as duplex printing but hence the lower price.

The HP Officejet 7000 Wide Format Printer is available for as little as $130 if you search.

There never really was going to be any clear winner here as the 2 companies are always neck and neck where as canon on these example possibly demonstrate a higher standard of print the but for more cost where as HP are right up there with them at a more affordable price. In reality you cannot really separate these 2 giants into a first and second place with inkjet A3 printers.

Before you consider a purchase, look at the many reviews available online.
