Brother MFC Printers

Brother MFC 6490CW PrinterIf you need a printer for your home or small office, Brother MFC printers are an excellent series to look into. Every brand has their claim to fame. For Canon, it would be high quality photo prints. For HP, it would be reputation and experience. For Brother, it’s versatility, reliability, and durability. They have ranges for mostly home or small business use.

The models in the Brother MFC series are either all-in-one or five-in-one, meaning they can all print, scan, copy and fax, while some can also PC fax. The models range from portables to flatbeds, but most of them fit right in the middle, making them excellent options for small office settings. Brother does seem to of made a niche for itself focusing on affordable multi function printers.

Home Use

They have a vast range of affordable multi functions that can be used in the home or by a student and they are priced with those kinds of users in mind. The Brother DCPJ125 Color Photo Printer with Scanner and Copier is a good case in point.

It’s faster than most need for home use with speeds of 33 ppm black and 27 ppm in fast print mode. It has a generous resolution of 6000 x 1200 dpi which offers borderless printing and has a 100 sheet input tray. It uses 4 cartridges and has a maximum monthly duty cycle of 2500 pages which is comfortable for most home users.

The price is a very reasonable $85 or there about if you search online and is a typical home use brother multi function that can print, scan and copy.

Other home business and small business type multi function printers from Brother include the Brother MFCJ220 Black Compact Inkjet All-in-One with Fax for the Small or Home Office User priced at around under $90.

High Standard Fax

The printing function for Brother MFC printers is decent, but not often spectacular. As stated earlier, Brother goes more for versatility than a focus in one specific area. That said, there seems to be consistency with the high quality of their fax machines.

While models aren’t often advertised for their fax functions, the fax function often seems to be the most impressive. This is due to features like Super 3G speed, caller ID, fax forwarding, fax paging, a cordless handset, as well as many others.

The scanners on these models have decent quality. The scanners are best known for their ability to scan large and oddly-shaped documents. This is a feature you rarely find from other brands and is a more important convenience than many might imagine.

Once you have the ability to scan almost anything, you will never settle for anything less again. The copier is impressive because of its speed. In most cases, you will also have the ability to enlarge and reduce documents from 25% to 400% in 1% increments.

Wireless Options

Brother MFC printers have a lot of interface options. These can often be USB 2.0, built-in 802.11b/g wireless, and 10/100Mbps wired (Ethernet). With these options at your disposal, you will be able to share a network with ease.

You can have a wireless option with the Brother MFCJ265W Compact Inkjet All-in-One with Fax and Wireless Networking which it is possible to find for as little as under $115.

Business Use

Brother designed these models knowing that the majority of people to purchase them would need them for office environments. This plays to your advantage. Based on customer reviews, about 90% of these models have been well received by those who use it for their small offices. That’s probably the only stat you need to know, but we’ll continue anyway.

They have a range of color laser printer multi function models such as Brother MFC-9120CN High Quality Digital Color All-in-One Printer with Fax and Networking for around $350.

Profit from Inks

There a few common negatives for models in the Brother MFC series. If you’re used to dealing with printers, then these negatives should come as no surprise. The most common complaint is ink consumption, but this is going to be the case regardless of the model or brand.

Companies that design printers do so to make the majority of their profit on ink, not the printers themselves. It’s very rare you will find a printer that offers low ink consumption. Another negative is paper jams, but this can often be avoided. For instance, if an input tray has a maximum capacity of 100 sheets, don’t put in 100 sheets.

They’re going to advertise the highest number they can get away with, which often means if you rely on that number, you will be dealing with many paper jams. The best rule of thumb to avoid paper jams is to always put in less the maximum capacity. This might not offer as much convenience, but it will help you avoid a lot of headaches.

There are other negatives that are specific to certain models, but I have reviewed all brands and Brother has the least amount of issues by far.

Brother MFC printers are easy to use, reliable, durable, and offer many useful and convenient features. If you’re looking for a machine that will last a long time and not give you many unexpected problems, Brother is the way to go.
