A New All-in-One

This fairly new product from Canon, the PIXMA MG8220 All-In-One Wireless Photo Inkjet Printer has been built with a smooth, fine-looking design, and offers a combination of ease of use, outstanding quality and flexibility.

Its feature highlights start with the Wi-Fi connectivity which is built-in that allows you to scan and print anywhere in your own home or office wirelessly. It has the Intelligent Touch System by Canon that makes the top of the printer into a touch panel that is quick to respond where only the buttons you need will be illuminated.

It can print borderless photos up to 8.5” x 11” size with maximum resolutions of 9600 x 2400 dpi, and six ink tanks that includes gray for color and black and white photos for professional use. You may be able to adjust the color of your photos with the included software.

Another plus is that you may be able to print photos from various online photo albums, like Picasa and Canon’s iMage Gateway, using PIXMA Cloud Link and without the use of a computer. It also has the ability to print Gmail™ and Google Docs™ attachments from any wireless device. AirPrint on the other hand is another application bundled with the MG8220 that prints wirelessly without the need to install device drivers, which thus saves time.

If you regularly print on printable CD, DVD and even Blu-ray Discs, this printer gives you the capacity to do so, and can even turn your high definition movie clips into photos! As an added value, it has a built-in auto duplex printing facility that lets you save on paper cost by up to 50% as it automatically prints on both sides of the paper.

Re-storing the original colors and reviving an old photo back to life as the MG8220 allows you to scan 35mm film and slides. Experience stunning scanned documents that uses advanced spot data correction and image analysis automatically. With your compatible iPod touch, iPhone, iPad, Android devices, you will be able to print wirelessly without a computer, plus print direct using compatible USB flash drives, memory cards, PictBridge and Bluetooth devices.

The MG8220 is compatible with Windows® 7, Windows Vista®, and Windows XP; and MacOS® X v10.4.11 to v10.6.x14.

So there you have the technical capability of the all-in-one printer PIXMA MG8220. Let’s now see what people think and say about it.

Many product review sites and retailer sites encourage customers to leave comments, positive or negative, and share their experiences using a product that they have purchased through their site. Such is the case with Amazon where many people prefer to buy their wares.

MG8220 has been made available on Amazon in August 2011. The people who left their feedback on Amazon’s Customer Reviews section were all generally satisfied with the product. 73% gave it a 5-star rating, and the 26% gave it a 4. Most people are saying that all you will need in an AiO are already included in this mean machine. They claim that it is very easy to use, and has great value for the price. It produces incredibly high quality photo prints and scans.

Some people say they find it very quiet and has a small footprint. If you were using a printer and a separate scanner previously, then yes, the MG8220 would definitely take up less space with measurements of 18.5″W x 15.6″D x 7.9″H, and not so heavy at 23.6 lbs.

A customer is quite happy using the stitch assistant and recommends it for scanning large images or documents.

Some of the negatives that have come up is that it takes 90 seconds to print a full page high-quality photo, but balanced that with saying he’s willing to wait for just a little under 2 minutes to get the quality prints he wanted.

Another is that it can be expensive. The Canon Direct Store had run out of stock of units but they retail the MG8220 at $300. It can be a little higher at Amazon but keep watching it regularly to check for changes as they do update their prices and products regularly.

A USB cord is not included, as usual, although most likely you will not need it as you would set it up to print wirelessly. But you will need the cord for when you use the scanner. First page takes a little slow to print out. The other issue is when you use the printer after a long non-use, and it has slept so to speak, it would take a while to wake up.

In a Nutshell

Overall, the Canon PIXMA MG8220 is a machine you may rely on if you need quality photos and scans, and superior color or monochrome document printouts and copies. In spite of the negatives and it being not inexpensive, the value that you get more than compensates for the price that you pay.
